Jack should understand...

I LOVE this show and I was just rewatching the seasons before the new episode on Christmas and something about the Season 3 New Year's episode has always bugged me. I understand that Jack is upset that Charles proposed to Elizabeth BUT I don't agree with him assuming that she encouraged him. Jack, of all people, should understand that a person who is interested may not take a direct "No" for an answer. Just look at Rosemary. She moved to Hope Valley because she wanted Jack back, stayed there, continued to pursue him despite him telling her he was interested in Elizabeth, and even attempted to sabotage Elizabeth on occasions. So I just don't find it believable that he couldn't possibly understand why Charles would just show up if he didn't believe he had a chance. If Elizabeth can believe that Jack never encouraged his EX-FIANCE, then Jack should not have trouble understanding that Charles came despite Elizabeth telling him that she was only interested in Jack.

We've never really seen Jack acknowledge how inappropriate Rosemary's behavior has been. So it's hard to say if it's that he's blind to it, doesn't think it's such a big deal, or that it's different because he's a man. Honestly that STILL really bothers me, because I feel the Rosemary/Jack situation was far more problematic and troubling than Elizabeth/Charles. I didn't feel like Charles was ever as intentionally mean towards Jack or ever tried to sabotage him.

I'm just glad that pesky Rosemary got married off and became somebody else's problem. A rich pushover like Lee is the perfect fit.
