Far from the first female lead thriller but nevertheless it stands out and can be seen as a precursor to movies like Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow.
Haywire (2011) is another similar one. Critics responded better to it than audiences did, however itโs a solid spy thriller with a stellar female lead and first-rate cast.
Also, The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) & Point of No Return (or the original Luc Besson movie) have a place in this conversation. Similar themes and action.

shareLa Femme Nikita (1990) by Luc Besson ... Instead of being sent to prison, Nikita is given a new identity and trained, stylishly, as a top secret spy/assassin.... Sounds familiar? ๐
Munich (2005) ... is a spy movie by Steven Spielberg, It's excellent, but is more serious in tone than the movies you mention as it deals with a real period in history and with some real events. Highly recommended.
Mission Impossible (1996) ... The first mission impossible movie by Brian DePalma feels a lot more like a spy thriller than the action oriented sequels.
