A love letter to the 80s ?

This movie reminded me a LOT of 80s coming of age movies not exactly like john hughes movies but still i thought about his movies while watching misstres america. Like the cool voice over at the ending reminded me of the ending from the breakfest club. And above all the 80s pop soundtrack was a big nod to the 80s i think.

So what do you guys thinks ?

reply

Maybe a little. Screwball comedy of the 30s and 40s is definitely the dominant influence, though.

A love letter to the 30s.

Yes, the synthesized score definitely sounds like it is out of 1986-1987.

I agree. Extremely derivative. Reminded me of one of Madonna's movies from the 80s.

Interesting. I hadn't really thought of it in comparison to those John Hughes movies but I see what you mean about the voiceover. You'll probably find this article interesting - Baumbach and Gerwig mention some of the movies they had in mind while making Mistress America. They do reference some '80s movies, but movies like Something Wild and After Hours. Anyway, here it is:

baumbach clearly has his head thinking very sentimentally...
