Amy talking about The Libertines

When Amy talks about the London of 2004 when the Libertines were at their peak, she said they made her feel "proud to be British". Aside from their talent, it was the excesses of this band (as their name implied) and immersion in drug culture which was packaged for public consumption. Much is said about their indie credibility, but they were selling a specific image as much as any commercial artist. The frontman Peter Doherty in particular was an artist literally worshipped by so much British youth, creating a real movement around himself and a scene in London which was impossibly romanticised, so that his image was that of one who must experience every excess and pleasure for his art to be truthful. This is the 'scene' which Blake came out of when he got his hooks into Amy, so one could argue that Blake was merely a product of this 'libertine' environment which looked so alluring on a glossy NME cover. When the Libertines first captured public imagination in Britain, Amy was in her 'Frank' era. The influence that this band exerted on British music culture can therefore be perceived in Amy's own change in image and immersion in drugs and alcohol which ultimately led to her death.
