Blake Fielder.....biggest SOB ever?

I knew nothing of Fielder before this documentary but I thought he came off very poorly, and not just because of exposing Amy to increased drug use. He seemed to want nothing to do with her before she really broke out and became famous. Interesting how he comes back right when she hits it big. Of course, you don't really know what happens behind closed doors but he didn't seem to truly care about Amy. He was shown as a selfish, self-involved, and admitted arrogant jerk.

Coming off nearly as badly is Amy's father, interested mainly in career ambition above all else.

I'm not saying Amy was blameless...the bulimia is a tragedy but hard to blame on someone else. But without scum like Fielder in her life as a negative influence, she might have been able to prevail. She was definitely self-destructive in general but it seemed like she just wasn't strong enough to overcome her demons.

Certainly, surrounding herself with bad people didn't help matters.

That´s what I thought too when watcing the movie. Didn´t he just go back to her because the album hit really big?

Chronologically in the film, that seemed to be the case.

I believe that to be the case too however there is one thing that trips me up about writing him off as a complete douchbag...he didn't go after any of her money during the divorce. I really expected him to and he didn't. Maybe there was an iron-clad prenup, but that is doubtful given the timing and circumstances of their wedding. Maybe he wasn't quite as awful once he cleaned up a bit? I don't know...but otherwise, yeah he seems to be a total waste of oxygen.

Not 100% sure if he "went after" the money or not, but he was plainly an attention-seeker and (unlike Amy), seemed to love being in the limelight and among the paparazzi. Not really a true 'evil' guy but just a useless, selfish tosser. He gave his true colors away with that interview when he bragged about being a 'good-looking bloke'.

Waste of space.

Calling this dude an SOB is an insult to SOB's. He wasn't sh** until he was standing at Amy's side. If it hadn't been for her nobody would know who he was. There is a scene in the movie where he is talking about all he has to offer and asking why he was wasting his time with HER. At her most drunk, high, and bulimic she was better than him sober. And her father was a bastard who spent more time trying to exploit her than trying to help her. At the end of the day Amy WAS self destructive, which ironically was why her music hit such a nerve with people. But while she was alive she really did do her thing when she was able and neither of these men will ever come close to what she accomplished. All they can do is use her name in death the way they used her in life. I hope they both get what they deserve.

To OP. Speaks volumes of her too. There's a saying where I live: "Tell me who you love and I'll tell you who you are." I'd say it means that if voluntarily love somebody bad then you're bad yourself for doing so.

Had she not been famous and talented that kind of behavior would have been scoffed at and dismissed as plain foolish for an adult woman.

He is nothing compared to Amy's father. It was her father who rode her like a dying horse on the gravy train, and it was her father who ultimately killed her. He did not care about her, he just cared about what she could bring to him or do for him.
