I was in love with a good 85% of this movie and then....

For me the movie fell flat. The ending could have been much better, and as much as I am against the "evil entity" winning I would not have minded too much in this case. On top of that it was not really an "evil Entity" considering they were pretty much stealing to begin with. Consider it more home security than anything else.

Now I understood the underlining meaning, the alchemy even the rhetoric and while it was obvious was was going to happen after a certain point. I just....I just can't say that I enjoy the ending or the last say...twenty-five minutes leading up to it. The movie was building up great, playing out so well but then just seemed to go in the wrong direction.

The young lady after figuring she needs to go back for (not spoiling) reasons can just make it through via mind over matter. Believe it or not that takes a lot to do. It's one thing to tell yourself "it isn't real" it's another thing to make yourself believe it to be true. She did it seemingly effortlessly. Then manages it back almost effortlessly, and admittedly kind of like a bad-ass.

I digress the legitimate ending in which they come out of the sewer upside down. That was very well played. That little bit I enjoyed a lot.

Was there anyone else who felt the same about the movie? Also feel free to disagree with this, it's just an opinion.

I wanted to know what was up with the creepy cult woman. She looked like she was staking them out at the beginning. How would she know they were going into the catacombs that she happened to be in at that very time? Was she connected to the alchemy like (I'm guessing) the creatures that broke from the wall carvings?

I read the directors cut showed more regarding the cult and the creepy woman. I never saw it though so can't confirm.

I feel the same way. I don't get what her purpose was in the movie at all.

I agree with you for the most part. But that was part of her character, first of all she is well-studied and level-headed (maybe a stretch due to her fascination/excitement) but she clearly has a logical mind. Aside from her knowing the proper route I wasn't surprised at that, I mean it was a do or die situation, she had an "ok" understanding of what was going on, and their trip there was very slow and cautious which makes up for how quickly she navigated everything I think.

The ending just sucked. Everyone of them should have died or stayed in hell forever.

While As Above, So Below is one of my favourite horror films in recent years (not that that's saying much...), I started to lose interest when it all dissolved into "run away from the monster" nonsense. I much preferred the film when it only gave hints at the evil around them and only showed a little bit - I absolutely love the shot of the hooded figure sitting in the chair. It was genuinely unnerving and made me feel so anxious, since we didn't know exactly what it was. When it finally showed what it was and it started chasing them, all that fear and tension dissolved. I do firmly belong to the horror movie school of thought that the less you see, the more you are afraid. That's why The Blair Witch Project is the best horror film ever made, in my opinion.

With suspenseful horror movies I agree with your terms completely. The only time I'm a bit put off about knowing less is when it's a creature feature and you hardly ever see the creature. One of those movies where the story centers around something that is either never present or hardly ever. Generally speaking that bothers me, but I have seen some creature features pull this off in a really good way.

What you're talking about in "As Above, So Below" is pretty much when I started to lose interest as well. All the running happened towards the end of the movie. Granted I would have been fine with them still reliving their regrets or rather having their regrets kill him. The burning car for example(or rather the guy in the car). Even though we saw that it was still an unknown and a frightful thing to witness.

The guy in the chair was creepy, and that went out the window when they appeared to just be mindless, aggressive monsters with some semblance of fashion sense. As for "The Blair Witch Project" to this day I have not seen it.

I think BWP was definitely a great movie at the time due to the newness of lost footage idea and marketing of it (is it real or not?). I haven't seen it in a long time but I don't think it would have all the greatness it had back then.
