It just came out today, and the people that would like it most, mostly see it this weekend.

I loved it. Again this wasn't made for the critics. It was made for the fans of the games. As far as I can tell the fans like it and that's what matters. I'll happily buy this on dvd.

where can i see it online? since i can;t go into theaters anymore

50 Shades of Grey was made for fans of the books, yet that does not make it a good movie. I will be seeing it soon though as a fan of the series.

Nope. Gamers are enjoying it. The public, of which I include myself, thought it as garbage. No characters with anything but a pixel-thin personality, a meandering storyline, lots of action and mayhem that is completely uninvolving. If the video game movie genre is ever to succeed (there has yet to be a successful adaptation) it has to do more than copy the video game. It has to approach it as a movie, and that requires something more fully realized in the way of character and plotting.

It's not hard to please a diehard fan but it is something else to make a viewer feel like he didn't just sit in front of his TV or laptop for 2 hours. Instantly forgettable.

The best variations on the genre are still films that took the subculture and crafted an original story or documentary. Wreck-It Ralph, Last Starfighter, King of Kong, Tron (barely).

The genre is still batting zero as cinema, even if the gamers are pleased.

I took my 6-year old and she enjoyed it, knowing nothing about the game. The two lead voice actors were in attendance (as were about 25 audience members) and she found it mildly amusing because she is into robots right now.

reply

See you missed the point. It's not meant for you. If you played the games you would have enjoyed it.

reply

No, he did not "miss the point". You shouldn't have to play the game in order to like the movie. Film adaptations should be able to stand on their own.

reply

Agreed. I was not a fan of rap, nor did I know much about Eminem, to like and appreciate 8 MILE. I hadn't played with Legos in decades but still loved THE LEGO MOVIE. I never much liked football but RUDY still inspires me. I could never stand the Beach Boys but thought LOVE & MERCY was one of the better films of last year. Same goes for STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON. All of these films took a fan-based topic and gave them dimension and character and made them MOVIES, not just retreads of their source material.

If you think the filmmakers intent was to make a film for only those who bought and played the video game, then either you are delusional or the filmmakers are doing a disservice to their financiers. If that was the case, they would have simply made it available for download. Films based on cultural properties are made to expand the audience and increase revenue. All the money that goes into making and marketing these films is not spent just to make the fans happy. A successful adaptation crosses over into a wider audience.

I'm not saying R&C didn't have its merits. The animation was fine enough and the voice acting was serviceable, but that all seems such a waste when there is no story worth watching.

Yeah, that's a load of bull

No it's not a load of bull. The guy made a lot of great points and all you can say is one sentence. I know you are but what am I! Please... 

I was hoping this movie would do well but it's been ripped apart by critics and had a miserable performance at the box office. 7th place on an opening weekend is just terrible. Nobody expected this to take down a juggernaut film like The Jungle Book but you want your movie to at least be in the top 3 on opening weekend.

It's a load of bull to me, I paid for my movie ticket. My money, my opinion

The title of this thread is THE PUBLIC OVERWHELMINGLY ENJOYED IT and the rebuttal has been "It was made for the fans". The fans are part of the public, but they aren't the public. Had the title been "THE FANBOYS OVERWHELMINGLY LOVE IT" you might have been on better footing, but even with that, there is not an overwhelmingly positive response. Those who love it love it and those who don't, of which there are many, don't. I went to see a movie, not play a video game, and there was no depth to the characters, relationships, or storytelling. Of course that's just my, and much of the public's, opinion. Check back in a year when the fanboys overloading the comments sections aren't skewing the vote.

Well screw y'all, I liked it.

I've played the games and I thought his movie was total garbage....

reply

Going by audience majority response being positive, I find that unlikely.

reply

Yes, the audience might be enjoying it. But they needed a story to attract more people for a larger audience beyond just the game players. If the only audience you attract are game players, they can't support a movie like this, and the box office shows it. A $20 million budget but only $8.6 million gross will not keep the studio in business very long. And over half that gross figure was earned opening weekend. Which explains why it was in theaters for only three to four weeks.

reply

Erm, the story was basically a hero's journey tale and more specifically, an animated action comedy inspired by Star Wars and Sci Fi in general (which was also a criticism of the movie since TFA came out months prior and the plots are similar).

You don't have to be a video game player or to have played video games to grasp the concept, and considering how short it was in theaters, I seriously doubt you've even seen it to comment on the story anyway.

The movie was poorly marketed, and came out after the stellar Zootopia, which killed it. R&C is in the same level of animated films like Despicable Me, fun albeit harmless and forgettable popcorn fluff.

And considering how Sony treats their franchises like Ghostbusters and Spiderman, are you really surprised this tanked?

reply

Sorry for the extremely late response, when you said "majority of the audience enjoyed it" I'd like to ask something first. What audience?
