Kinda, yeah. It began as a parody of that, then naturally grew into its own thing. Rick is very much based on Doc, if Doc were a filthy-minded dipsomaniac hedonist. Morty isn't much like Marty, though.

I would say it is a collection of shows. The loose base is Back to the Future but is reminds me of Doctor Who, Quantum Leap, Babylon 5 and The Simpsons all thrown into a blender.
