Second watch

I saw this a second time today. It's a near-masterpiece. Exceptional piece of cinema. The first time you don't know exactly which way the film is heading to and might leave the viewer slightly confused, but on a second viewing all will make perfect sense (why those stories/characters are picked, how they are connected etc). The character development is excellent and there are various social and political themes explored throughout. One of the best films I've seen this year.

I Sympathize with Lars Von Trier.

I haven't seen anything else from Jia yet, but I must say I loved this one and I certainly will watch everything else he's done.
Also, did you see this two times, or was it your first watch that led you to such assumptions?
(By the way, we probably have very different cinematic tastes, so I don't think we would easily agree. I see you've given Requiem for a Dream, Cloud Atlas, Salo and Holy Motors a 1/10 and Melancholia a 2/10, whereas I consider all of them masterpieces and gave them a 10).

I agree also, this is a great film. It does have a little weakness weaving the last two stories. Overall the film left a good impression on most viewers.

Criticism of the director should be deflected. Hollywood is churning out so much big budget CGI crap that all directors making something else should be applauded.

Anyhow , the dude bashing this film is just a burnt out cynic. All you have to do is watch all the Criterion Collection of a various auteur directors. And then you can be a film snob saying such and such isn't that good.

Anyhow, it's great that you gained even more from the film after a second viewing.
I really enjoyed the pacing and direction of the film. I had not idea or assumptions going into this film. It was purely random and it was rewarding to stumble upon this film.

See ya at the movies!
