I don't quite get the immense popularity of either of these films, but I admit to having more laughs from the second one. I saw finally saw these movies after hearing people rave about the music and comedy.
The critics say the second one is too cartoony and the first one felt more real. I can see that. But the first one was also kind of dull. There's a certain comedic savagery on display in PP2 that I like more, where they constantly make fun of the genre. I even found Rebel Wilson's character much funnier here (not every moment was a home run, but she kept me awake).
The meta joke machine became self-aware in Pitch Perfect 2.
