Could he have survived without contributions from mankind.

And I am not talking about his support crew.

He got too important contributions that were artifacts of human existence. The first being the trash that washed up on shore. I don't have a problem with him using this, I think he was simulating a shipwreck survivor. Second, the feral goat. These again are really nothing more than junk that washed up on the shore.

3,000 years ago neither the trash nor the goat existed on the island. It appears to have very few natural resources which is why it is uninhabited. There are very small, very remote islands in the Pacific that manage to support human populations.

Other than the goats the only other terrestrial mammals seem to be rats. I imagine he could eat those. Also, there seems to be no basalt rocks which are very beneficial for making stone tools. He was lucky that piece of metal washed ashore to use as a blade.

Maybe, but it would be harder.

There has to be a fresh water source somewhere on the island if goats and rats are living there.

He could eat the rats, but he'd also have to start fishing. While not optimal he could create a spear out of wood for fishing.

As for cleaning the fish and rats, he had to find something to use. If there are no rocks that can hold a point, he'd have to use shells or fishbones as cutting implements.

Don't think rats are indigenous to the Fuji Islands.

The rats are not indigenous either, they are transplants from the Age of Sail. All of those old wooden ships were infested with rats, and as the European traders, explorers and conquistadors explored the globe, some of the rats they brought with them got left behind.

Even so I wouldn't really consider the trash or the goat to be contributions from mankind, at least if used to mean 'cheating.'

The antiobiotics however are another story. It is possible that he might not have survived without those.
