Whats the food % that is really good

I wonder how much food is really good, of course he cant say the food is blend and its nothing special on camera.

Of course he could, if he had any integrity. In fact, that's what he's supposed to do, if he wants his show to be informative in any way.

Except for back in 1958, Savile seems to have lived an exemplary life - rjfme

You can tell when Anthony doesn't like something. Sometimes he just mutters "that's good" with zero enthusiasm but often he will simply say nothing. He'll describe the dish in detail while the camera is showing its preparation but then he says absolutely nothing while he takes a few bites or drinks some wine. I see it all the time. On the other hand, this is contrasted with his over-the-top praise when he likes something. "I will never have a meal like this as long as I live." "People will be asking you to prepare this dish forever." "I could eat 50 of those..."

I'd say Bourdain is not impressed with close to half the food he tries.

I kinda picked up on that and thats the reason I asked. Because some times he says - "Oh my god, this is good", and some times he says - "that's good" which you know that is ok but nothing memorable really.

In his defense, some of the places he visits are relatively poor and they mentioned it in one of the episodes in S04. This is the poor's man food. So we know to expect greasy simple food over something unique with good ingredients.

Greasy simple food is very good too, you don't need fancy ingredients.

In the Detroit episode you could tell he really liked the barbecue that was on the side of the road. Especially the collard greens and pork, that was him excited about food.

reply

I agree.
If you've watched Anthony for a few years (as I have)----and all the permutations of his food shows--- by now you can certainly tell when something is just not that good, (in his opinion). He has a special way of getting to the point.

And also, you can certainly tell when he truly LOVES a certain recipe! His positive adjectives go on and on. Plus, he gets that big grin on his face if something's good.

When he ate at the Coney joint in Detroit , I was sure it must have been gross but then he asked for a second one ?

reply

If you're a hot dog fan, you'll love a Coney Island chili dog. Google Detroit Coney Island hot dog and see the overwhelming praise. I'm pretty sure Bourdain enjoyed that experience. 🌭👍

Not a dog fan but you convinced me to try a bite ;P

If they invite him to their home, or to their BBQ, even if the food is crap, its extremely poor manners t say it sucks and insult his hosts. Its even worse of an insult, since he isnt just a stranger invited to dine, he is a stranger from another country, invited to dine with his hosts. I'd much rather thanks my hosts and not insult bad food, than to insult bad food, insult people who invited me into their home and country, and be seen as the typical 'ugly american' to them. So of course he is polite when invited to have even bad food.
