Time period confusion

Is this a present day story or a period piece? The girl's cloths & hair look like older styles, but the beeping medical equipment is modern.

I don't know why they chose to give it that particular blend. The car they were in during the accident and the car she was driving in the film were both from the 50's to early 60's, she even dressed like she was in that era, but they clearly show new present day cars and yes updated medical equipment. There was another odd bit in the film where the cops run the plates on the abandoned car from the accident. They say it hasn't been registered since the 60's, it made no sense and was never explained any further, either lazy writing or a scene was cut, most likely the prior.

I think the movie ending was changed, because I think the original story would be the woman was living in the past, as if she was trying to recreate the childhood memories of her parents growing up in the 1950s/1960s.

But that idea was changed to make the prisoner part of the little girl abduction story, so the 1960s references then made no sense.

boatlandmore,

I thought it was because her character was crazy and she didn't want to leave that era of 1950-1960's in the past. Her comfort zone/bubble.

It was only her. Even the cop had a computer

It was present day. Some of the cars on the road were modern.

Then it was goofy as all get out if it was supposed to be "present day". I had the same issues from the get go about the period. Till my wife told me to shut up. But, then none were explained...nor made any sense.

Cop: Ancient fan with a grill over it any kid could stick his whole hand into. His phone is a also quite dated...with a flat screen monitor on his desk...huh?
Female cop wearing shoulder walkie talkie...I don't think that was a going thing in the 60's 70's...would have liked to gotten a better look at her service weapon...revolver or semi?
Yeah, the medical equipment looked pretty up to date...especially an "at home" monitoring system sans CRT display. But man, that reciprocating saw looked like it came out of museum.

An aside...she had the approach for a lobotomy all wrong...plus what she was using looked like the equivalent of going into the brain with a shovel. I also think she was using plastic disposable syringes which was not a widespread practice to my nursing recollection.

I realize "the woman" may have kept her home like a museum...so nothing (except as mentioned the medical equipment) looked "too" out of place.
But the red herrings abounded elsewhere, making this a rather nonsensical and silly escapade.
Plus...was the little girl wearing a skirt home from school that looked ridiculously short for an elementary schooler of that period (if it was the 60's 70's)?

People are stating it's in the present but why is she wearing a 60s nurse's uniform equipped with a 60s nurse's cap? Nurses haven't worn those in years.

If she were in the present and walked around in the hospital dressed like that, she'd definitely stick out and definitely get signaled out. I mean seriously, if you're going to murder someone in a hospital, the last thing you'd want to do is stand out, right?

This of course brings me to the kidnapping scene. So we're in the present riding around in an older model car, kidnapping a kid? So much for being discreet! Obviously a couple with borderline intellectual functioning. I'm surprised she was capable of holding the guy hostage as long as she did.

And what's with the French speaking physician while everyone else speaks English???

I agree, this movie's execution was all wrong.

Although it was never explained as such and left to the viewer to wonder I kind of think a lot of people are missing the supernatural element and just looking at this as a plain psychotic wife film. This does not seem to be a normal woman, her dress style and hair style dates to the 1930's her cars date to the 50's / 60's her home has elements of various time periods and throughout the film there are hints in the way she talks about certain things that she has perhaps first hand experience of different time periods Hence I tend to think you are meant to see her as some sort of supernatural being be it ghost, immortal, alien, time traveller whatever.
