As someone that has ran horror blogs and gone to countless film premieres. Here's two thoughts:
1.) A lot of bloggers will try to find something positive to say about a film, even if it doesn't deserve it, simply b/c they want to stay on the screener / publicity list for a film distributor. -- OR -- They get to talking to the filmmakers behind a project and give a positive review simply b/c they like the person.
At the end of the day, you have a responsibility to your readers to be honest. You can't let your feelings towards a filmmaker or a distributor cloud your judgement. Some people will hate you for it in the short term, but in the long run, more people will respect you for being truthful.
2.) Before a small film like this is released on DVD, usually it's friends, family, other people they work with in the industry attending screenings of the film. They're not going to give someone they know a low rating, hence why some of these films have pretty decent ratings before being released to the mainstream.
PS: My blog is http://brandoncsites.blogspot.com and I always tell it like it is whether or not it's the popular or cool opinion to have.
