Any thoughts on all the pillow ripping?

Why did the old Slovenian guy cut open his pillow and take a look at the filling? Did I miss something that explains his action?

In the village, all matrasses, pillows and cushions were ripped open. Do I have to assume this was also done by the villagers? But why? It makes no sense to me that the entities would spend their time ripping all of them...
