a madea-sque crap...why does he thinks this is entertaining?

I don't get it. This is like a slap in the face, taking black entertainment back to the minstral show era. Why is Perry so fascinated by old ladies who are uncouth, annoying country bumpkins? This isn't funny and its not drama. Its not creative, new or enlightening. Its just so backward style, I was halfway expecting Amos and Andy to make an appearance.

He keeps coming up with the characters because they are who he knew growing up and many other people know them too, except apparently you.

I agree the show is awful, but not for that reason. Just because what Tyler does is not to your liking, your experience, or what you identify with, means he should stop. There are other people who like it. What's backward to you is a step forward for someone else. It all depends on one's individual perspective. I thought everyone knew that.

Seeing by the lack of positive threads in this forum apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thus I haven't read any threads here promoting this project either.

So in your words why is the show awful? What do think he should do to improve it?

I wondered why TBS didn't pick up this show since TP had already created 3 series for the network? Not many people receive the OWN channel. I would guess TP would want the series viewed on a network that his fans receive.

The show was awful to me because it didn't make me laugh. The dialogue is like a bad book. I hate when either one, films or books, don't allow you to figure things out on your own. It's like, "Yeah, mom, you know I have to live here because I don't have a job and my husband...." The dialogue works too hard to give the viewer the answers rather than let them gradually find things out. Just a pet peeve of mine. The actors are a little stiff.

How to improve? Stop with the insults. Fred Sanford and Aunt Esther, George Jefferson and Florence, Mr. Brown and lady and his daughter... Now this woman and her brother in law. That formula gets old. The whole formula this show is based on is "old". I think fresh and new would improve it.

But that's just me. I would never say the whole show should be tanked because I don't like it though. To each his own. There are people out there who do like it...and for them, I hope it becomes a successful show.

I've only seen two episodes. I may give more a try. I still love Tyler Perry though. He will always be admirable to me.

ditto RigbyEleanor. Thanks for your response.

I gave this show another shot when it was repeated Thursday evening. I just can't get past the 'plastic' acting. I agree the actors were stiff and the comedy seems forced. The main character Hattie, which we all know is a younger actress playing the role of a 70ish year old woman. But her voice, animations as with everything else appears to be like an audition going bad.

My hopes for Tyler Perry is to work with a team of sitcom writers who have the experience in writing and delivering comic dialogue; like the writers for Martin as an example or Saturday Night Live. A show about an old granny who displays how hip she is by doing the Beyonce Bounce in order to keep it real is tired. When Vicki Lawrence played Mama on Mama's Family it was convincing, funny and entertaining, but people don't want to see this 30 years. As for the younger generation who were post-Mama's Family don't find it entertaining in the least. The ones I know of course.

Exactly! And I'll take it a step further and say the haters are taking this show way too personally! Those who don't like it are acting personally offended, like it's an insult on their family or something...very strange.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Maybe that's all he knows how to write?

reply

Which is why he should consider a writing team. His fans will always support him, but why not go for having a larger fan base? because of his other works, he has potential but the comedy is lacking.

reply

The characters are being directed as if they were doing a stage play. Extremely difficult to watch. They stop to wait for a reaction and most of the time nothing said was funny!

"Sheldon:Was the starfish wearing boxer shorts? Because you might have been watching Nickelodeon."

I noticed that too. It doesn't flow naturally and there are those minor pauses, where the actor is clearly thinking of how to perform and not just performing in the moment of the scene.
