cancelled.

Sad that it will not be picked up. British TV is getting more like the US , dropping good shows, keeping crap.

IMHO.

That's awful. I really liked these characters. The Bletchley Circle was another one that wasn't renewed. Bah humbug.

I thought it was very atmospheric and had good actors, but to me, it came across as if it were trying for a Mad Men kind of success, even down to the smooth womanizer with the hidden past, the buxom red head who wants a better life and the stylized 60's era graphics of the opening. Yeah, the formula works, but maybe the ratings weren't good enough to justify the cost of continuing Breathless. Too bad, nice little soap, and I will miss my doses of Jack Davenport and Sarah Parish.

I agree. I already wrote a post on how so NOT like Mad Men it is. The only similarities were strictly superficial. Even with Otto, you learn pretty quickly he is not a Don Draper ( much as I love the Draper character and want him to win in the end).

So I join in the disappointment over the cancellation. Interesting characters you could care for and enough tension to keep me interested.

I don't think I realized there would be no more Bletchley Circles. Another show I loved with great characters.

Seems that any show that tries to recreate the 60's gets lumped into the "Mad Men" comparison. Same thing happened to another wonderful British show, "The Hour," among others.

Getting a bit concerned by the number of good programs being dumped. Personally I think it's the dumbing down that has occurred worldwide. No-one can hold a thought for long, delay gratification or enjoy suspense. This series beautifully realised, well cast and good script for starters. Was it aired at the wrong times? How was it publicised? I don't think much marketing went on here or elsewhere perhaps? Not enough word-of-mouth. It may be a quiet binge watch on DVD for those who finally caught on too late. On a final note, did anyone do any research post airing? Any useful analytics from data - assuming it was collected and someone knew what to do with it. Hm.

this is a bummer.... I was also annoyed when I found out that The Bletchley Circle was cancelled, I enjoyed that show when I discovered it earlier this year on PBS.... this cancellation is especially annoying because I was expecting 6 episodes based on this page... so when ep 3 ended, I was expecting all the loose ends to be cleared up in the final 3 episodes, not realizing that PBS apparently combined 6 hour-long episodes into 3 90 minute shows.... finding that out made the ending more perplexing until I saw this thread announcing the cancellation of the series, meaning that obviously the loose ends would be addressed in the next season that we no longer will get....

This show got cancelled because it was terrible. I love British TV, dramas, mysteries, procedurals, and even soaps if well done. This one was sorry. I can't even imagine comparing this to Bletchley Circle, which had interesting and likable characters and compelling mysteries. Breathless had bad writing, no sympathetic characters, and the deadest plot I've seen in quite a while. Both Bletchely and Breathless dealt with past attitudes towards women. Bletchely used it to strengthen its female protagonists but had a bad habit of making men nothing but obstacles for them. Breathless went much farther, essentially portraying women as a servant class. It was a ridiculous bit of retroactive morality that oversimplifies 1960s culture and villifies every man in it. I quit after three episodes and wondered why I lasted that long.

I'm American, and this is arguably the worst example of British television I've ever seen, especially given its A-list cast, high production value, and serious intent.

Well, you´re right. I´m an European and usually I prefer British series, but this was a sad disapointment for me. Beautifull grafic, but the characters dull, plots silly - I watched 1. series and had no wish to see any more.
