Never going to sit through this again...

What a dreadfully dull and disappointing production! Now what am I going to watch for the next 6 Sundays?

The acting is fine, but the script, directing and editing have left us with a muddled show that had my husband (a Mad Men addict) snoring on the couch.

6? Are you sure? Ohmygawd. I hated the 1st episode...I thought it was only 3 weeks. All characters are crazy, there is no mystery, who cares? It is a bloated, grade c soap opera.

reply

I believe it is ~ 6 hours, but 3 weeks(2 ea Sunday).

Thanks, rosen!

I agree completely, rod775-1! I resent the Masterpiece team's wasting my precious Mystery season with this tripe. I'd rather watch series taken from the original Mystery series rather than wade through this awful non-story. I was gasping for breath with all that gratuitous smoking. Having lost both parents far too young to smoking-related ailments, too much smoking, even on TV or in the movies, is a huge turn-off for me. When will the industry agree to let viewers fill in with imaginary smokers, rather than needing to be so realistic about such a disgusting habit?

Put puppy mills out of business: never buy dogs from pet shops!

greenegg, I'm very sorry to read about your parents' illnesses, and I appreciate and respect your complaint. But don't forget that for a long time smoking was, unbelievably, considered healthful in the sense that it helped to prevent obesity. It wasn't until after the time this show is set that packs of cigarettes were required to state the Surgeon General's warning about the dangers of smoking.

I'm not trying to be cheeky, but could this be one reason why the show's titled Breathless?

I agree with your negative assessment greenegg, except for the smoking. I like their depiction of that because it is accurate. I had parents & grandparents who smoked like that back then, and it made me miserable and angry for many years. However, the show reminds me of how far we've come away from that, and how much better people's lives are by being protected every day from that disgusting, noxious, deadly smoke. I'm grateful for every reminder.

I so agree! What a disjointed, peculiar, and badly conceived and written nonsensical mess this was. To think I waited all day to see this stupid conclusion!

reply

I thought it was great, exactly the kind of tv series I love to watch.

There's no accounting for taste.

reply

I thought it was wonderful. I'm so glad I recorded it.

I adore this Masterpiece drama for so many reasons...fantastic production values, honorable and interesting characters, historically accurate story lines...just received the double DVD set so I can watch it repeatedly.

And yes, I was around in the sixties and recall how married women were treated like children by professional men. Quite often a woman's husband was consulted regarding her important health decisions, rather than the woman herself. Unmarried women were offered few opportunities to be treated respectfully as autonomous adults. I think this drama was spot on and I am willingly "...going to sit through this again" and again! Watching it now, as a matter of fact!
