I'm confused.

Is this a continuation of the previous show, a retelling, or what? I saw the first episode and things are different with different names for the shen gong wu and different characters but things are similar as well. From what I remember at the end of the previous show the warriors became Xiaolin Dragons, didn't they? But now they're saying they're not Dragons? So if they're just starting, how did they get almost all of the shen gong wu and why do they already know who Jack is? Also, what's with the Tron outfits when they have a Xiaolin Showdown?

I consider it a retelling. Sure they still have a back story, that could seem like they are continuing from last series (Jack knowing chase, wuya and the monks having all the wu) but it's a retelling, with a lot of the story already done to make it seem like a sequel

"a father can't murder his own children that would be in bad taste"

I agree with it being a sort of retelling but like from a parallel world or something. The series is still very new with only 3 episodes that I have seen but an example is in one episode Master Fung was telling the story of Grand Master Dashi and Wuya, in this telling Master Dashi imprisoned Wuya in a spring instead of a puzzle box. While telling the story Dojo makes the comment that he thought it was a puzzle box not a spring but Master Fung kind of brushes him off. So yes it could be a retelling or parallel world.

That all being said I am not a fan of the CGI during the showdowns and I wish they had just used the same names for all the items but that's a minor grumble on my part as all the new comers (younger kids that didn't catch the first series) to the series won't know the difference.

reason for all the recent names and different actors voicing for the characters except jennifer hale who voiced wuyu now voices kimiko and tara strong still voices omi and ping pong as for the other actors/actress there all canadian bc due to the agreement with canadian company who makes the show clearly stated that all voices actors must be canadian and have to change a few names of the shen gong wu.

But if ask me the 2D visuals isnt good as compared when xiaolin showdown was created.

reply

Accept Cree Summers who voices wuyu isnt canadian she was born in Los Angeles so idk how the company missed that lol

Dual citizenship. She was born in the united states, but her parents are both Canadian. The ironic thing though is that Maurice LaMarche, voice of Fung for seasons 2 and 3, is Canadian too, so he could have very well returned. I do imagine though that hiring another actor to play a role that's limited in the series wouldn't be too cost effective though, particularly for someone as well known as LaMarche.

My understanding for the Shen Gong Wu having different names is that because the original series was a Warner Brothers production they own the rights to the names of those Shen Gong Wu, but the show is really getting confusing with some of these shen gong wu showing up.

You could argue that the Shroud of Monster Camo is not the Shroud of Shadows because its effects are flawed, but the Blue Ray Manta Ray is very clearly the Silver Manta Ray, yet no one recognized it.

For the theory that Omi's trips to the past changed the future to lead to some of these things then Omi would have to recognize the Blue Ray Manta Ray as the Silver Manta Ray, but he doesn't.

That doesn't really make sense since they were able to make a sequel series in the first place so they should be able to obtain the names of everything from the original show. They obtain the names of other things so I don't see why others would get restricted. Perhaps they didn't do their research enough and got some info wrong when they were making this show. It tends to happen when a sequel come about years later, as well as being produced by a different company.
Not necessarily. They could have gotten permission from Warner Brothers to make the series and use the characters, but Warner Brothers could have retained the Shen Gong Wus names for some reason.

Who knows why that would happen, but that they would slip up on something so significant to the show show they're putting so much effort and money into when all they would have to do is a simple Google search could get them the name of every Shen Gong Wu, what it does, what it looks like, when it first showed up, and every episode it was used in seems less likely than Warner Brothers keeping the rights to something they gain nothing from by holding onto it.

Thanks for the reply, guys.

Yea, that's kind of what I'm thinking too, that it may be a bit of a retelling but also a continuation in a way because I went back and watched the last two episodes of the previous series and I was mistaken, they never became Dragons. However, Rai was chosen as the leader.

It is a bit weird though and in my opinion does kind of detract from the story that they didn't just continue from where they left off. They could have easily just taken one episode and said "Previously, on Xiaolin Showdown..." and recapped the previous series and then said "Now, on Xiaolin Chronicles..." That wouldn't explain for the weird changes, though. I have read that some things were changed for copywrite reasons but I've read so little about the show that I'm not sure where I read that. It really is annoying that they changed the names of the Shen Gong Wu, though lol. Also, it is weird watching a show and having a different voice come out of most of the characters.

The one thing that works though is the time travel craziness. If you really need reason for all the drastic changes, Omi time traveling and whatnot messed with everything-true they fixed it, but there were shared memories of both timelines. Maybe there was, like, a backdraft of timetravel energy and it warped things to what we see now.

your thoughts?

I loved the original series. However this new "re-telling" leaves a lot to be desired. From the changing of the names of the Shen gon wu, to the re-animation, the CGI effects when there's a showdown. It's just a bit of a let down. Plus so far the plot is uninteresting. And what's this about Omi being the only one that has access to the wu vault. Too much change. Be careful about bending the rules. You bend them to much and they'll grow up wrong.
