Your point has also been made by others - Efron seems to make the same kind of movie over and over. Efron has admitted that he does some projects because he thinks he can "bring something" to them from his own life experiences. In the case of We Are Your Friends, he has lived in The Valley and he was part of a posse of young guys (in their case, trying to make it as actors), so you can see the parallels. But the job of an actor is to pretend to be someone he is not. Efron needs to find more roles like in The Lucky One (he has never been a military vet) and Parkland (never an emergency room surgeon).
Of course, as I have also explained above, he may not be getting many offers for bold new parts because the studios and producers feel safest by casting him in the same kind of movies he has done before. No one wants to give him a chance in a crime drama or action flick or sci-fi role because he doesn't have a track record for that sort of thing. An actor can only take the parts he is offered.
