Digging for the body? Why?

I must have missed the first few minutes but I don't know why the police were digging in the communal garden 5 years after the boy went missing. Did they get a tip or did the gardener find something? I couldn't understand what prompted the search after so many years.

I thought the series was compelling and moving and quite well-acted. I was puzzled at first by the introduction of the DCI's child's autism but even DCI Banks has some personal stuff in it. I guess it humanizes the police and adds another dimension to the drama, rather than concentrating solely on the "crime."

If I am remembering correctly, the guys digging at the beginning were not police. It was more of some kind of construction or gardening project or something like that.

There was a broken water main — at one point you see a little sandwich sign on the street apologizing for the problem.
