He plays a very important role in the film. He disappears before the final LA showdown. He is so charismatic in this film though, it's Kurt Russell like you've never seen him before. Rumor has it that he'll be back in Furious 8. For that reason alone, I will go and see the movie again. He was brilliant.

its a decent size role with a bit of screen time but def did it for a paycheck cause didn't work in the movie at all in my opinion

Carpenter also hates sequels and didn't really want to do L.A. so I doubt he'd do another one.
@marty1968 We've got a Blade Runner sequel on the way, so an Escape sequel is possible.

Kurt Russell’s role has obviously been expanded - Even with editing, it’s clear that Kurt Russell’s role in Fast 7 was originally supposed to be an extended cameo. Instead, his role was upgrade to that of a co-star as he has nearly as much screen time and dialogue as the main characters.share
A fun theory that is out there suggests Kurt’s unnamed character in this is really Frescia from Tequila Sunrise. These kind of things are always nothing more than wishful thinking, however I can see why this has been speculated.
At any rate, his role was obviously important enough that he returned in the next movie. When he put on those shades in the warehouse and started blasting away... rad. 😎
