PG-13?

how did they get away with that? seemed over the top on the violence (I liked it, don't get me wrong)

I agree - the movie was absolutely brutal from a violence perspective. People vaporized, an arrow through the head, Amazons' necks broken, Steve Trevor's hanging, killing of the Lightning kids, and to top it off - looking through the hole in Thawne's head.

A lot of times cartoons get away with stuff because the "people" being killed are in full cover suits, so one could rationalize "Oh, they're not really people" - that's not the case here!

They got away with it because "it's a comic book" - if this had been live action, it absolutely would have been an R.

Well, at least they didn't show any naked breasts, so any kids watching it won't be affected.

It seems that some people think that cartoons are always for kids. So if you watch a live action superhero movie, that is acceptable but if you watch a superhero cartoon then you are being immature. I think that is funny because these superhero cartoons are much darker and violent than the live action movies even though they have the same PG-13 rating. In reality, kids should watch the live action movies and the adults should watch the cartoons.
