Good film - ignore the IMDb rating (slight spoilers)

This is art house horror; it's slow and reflective and has a subtext about women's sexuality and the price they pay as girls becoming women. The scenery is beautiful and the film has lots of atmosphere. The actress who plays Maria and the actress who played her mother were both beautifully delicate, which provided a strong and ironic contrast to them as werewolves.

I enjoyed the film very much and would recommend it. It merits more than 6.0 rating and I've given it 8.0.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

Thank you for clarifying the overall tone of the film. May I ask if the werewolves/transformations were shown on screen? or is it metaphoric or perhaps just implied?

reply

Yes the transformation was shown on screen. Not wholly but in parts and then we see Marie when she becomes a full werewolf at the end. I think it functions as a metaphor too in terms of women's sexuality and beauty and the need to be a she-wolf to defend one's self.

I agree and also rated the film 8/10 (I would say it's easily a 7 or 7.5 for me in any case and I thought I'd be nice and round up).

It has a wonderful, eerie atmosphere I felt and although it didn't change my world, it did have something interesting and more to suggest about women which leads on to it also being nice that it is a strong, female-lead film both literally and as it has something to say about women. Although this says nothing about its quality, it isn't a very common thing so I feel there's also something admirable in that.

Glad you liked it. I agree with your comments on the film and I would rate it 7.5 but rounded it up to an 8. I hope that this gets a wider release and increased appreciation.

Just saw this and I have to admit that I was more or less disappointed.

Yes, the cinematography, the overall mood, and coming of age metaphors were all executed well... but in other aspects it was an extremely typical Nordic drama with the ending of a typical horror movie. I had higher hopes of the movie.

I'm not saying the movie was actually bad, but I didn't find it that special.

I found it pretty boring and underwhelming. I also don't give a *beep* about women's sexuality. Cinematography was nice, acting was OK but the script was lackluster. I did like that she turned into a member of the Thundercats at the end. I'd give it a 5.8/10.

Much better horror released in 2014, still working my way through it all. Most of it isn't that great though.

Or an hirsute girl being herself, and being acknowledged as beautiful. Pitfalls of being a woman facing the judgement of society. 7/10

No from the father he was saying that she will always be beautiful and he felt the same way about the mother and boyfriend still loves her regardless like the father. It's not a expose of image for girls. Both sexes can be look at as sexual objects women's struggle isn't any harder then men. get over your self

much better than i expected I really enjoyed it.

7/10
