wow really don't like Caroline S anymore

Loved her the first 2 seasons. She was bitchy, but fun bitchy. Now she just seems angry. And she was very rude to Julie in this episode. When you are a guest in someone's house you respect their time. Showing up late to tea, and then dinner and then bitching about the house rules is just plain rude. The house rules were just don't pass food around and don't go out smoking during dinner in the garden. Hardly rules..its about being polite.

Tardiness was very rude, yes. The rules, I get CS's anger though.

Telling your guests that they HAVE to eat deer meat, ESP a YOGI forcing someone to eat mammal meat, is inexcusable! An American with a thick Chicago accent telling another Chicagoan that she must follow the ENGLISH ARISTOCRATIC rules of carcass eating is just about the stupidest, most asinine thing I've ever heard or seen in my life!

Then, for the Chicagoan wife of an Earl to tell another very wealthy English woman how to behave in a manor or whatever it is, ABSURD! Julie really needs mental health help, her ego vs. true personality is exploding and in the worst way possible.

I'm not saying CS's reactions and responses to the rules were exactly appropriate, but for any human, especially a so-called friend, to try to force another friend and contemporary to do something against their will, without considering their guests' needs, wants, and desires, is the epitome of rudeness and bad manners. I know Harry and Wills would never treat their own friends this way, probably never have. Diana taught them way better than Queenie ever did, and I think the Queen is probably more relaxed and less anal, at least in recent years thanks to Diana's influence and to her grandsons' personalities, than JM is acting towards CS and Juliet recently.

Yes, ever since CS lost her business she has been extra harsh and bitchy and commandeering, but I don't think she is wrong. Delivery and attitude and harshness, wrong, reasons behind her attitude and her opinions, correct. IMHO, of course :)

I thought Caroline S. was beyond rude. I am really struggling to like her but being hours late to both tea and dinner was just ridiculous. Granted, Julie should have housed them (or better yet - not invite Caroline S. and Juliette at all) at Mapperton instead of making them trek to a hotel 30 minutes away. Is Mapperton really that small?

As for not liking the food being served - As Caprice said in season 1. the proper etiquette is to respond to the invitation and tell them about food preference at that point. Caprice was able to eat no meat at the first Mapperton dinner party while Juliette and the other American chick were passing dinner plates to trade food.

Caroline was petulant and rude, but, Julie was just as bad. As the hostess for the gathering she should have ensured her guests were staying somewhere close enough to Mapperton to not cause issue. Lecturing grown women was ridiculous and if she doesn't like the way they behave then don't invite them.

The fact is, Julie treated them like children with her scolding, and rules, and strict seating placement and Caroline reacted, in turn, like a child.

Yeah!!!!!

Had Caroline not shown up FOUR HOURS LATE to begin with, they all could have toured the property, gotten to the hotel, then returned for dinner. But by being four hours late CS ensured they'd be late to everything.

And Julie's "rules" were basically, don't be rude. If Julie treated them like children it's because they acted like children. Seriously, don't smoke and don't pass plates at the dinner table? And don't complain? That's basic decorum for being a guest in someone's home. The fact that these women need to be explicitly told shows how uncouth and lack of grace they are.

And I can't stand Julie, so I'm not saying this as a fan of hers. I'm just picturing myself at that dinner table and what I'd do if someone served me something I didn't like or asked me not to stink up their place with cigarettes or litter their property with cigarette butts. I'd smile and comply.

I honestly think some of this is contrived for story lines simply because I can't see someone being legitimately 4 hrs late to a dinner party! ๎€ฆ

It was extremely rude to be that late. Calling to let Julie know what time they would be there would have been good. I could have told you the ladies would be late for dinner- perhaps they should have just stayed at Mapperton until after dinner.

I make no excuses for their behavior at their previous visit to Mapperton, but lecturing your adult guests and giving rules is totally inappropriate. Julie claims she wants to prove herself in the running of the estate, and she has failed horribly so far.

reply

She didn't make them curtsy or address her by a title. I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask your guests not to smoke on your premises. It's a disgusting habit that bothers people who don't smoke and would prefer their house not smell of cigarettes, or their yard not be full of cigarette butts. Honestly, I'm surprised anyone can respect Juliet and Caroline's requests. If they want to smoke in their own homes that's their business. They have no right to ruin someone else's property.

reply

Smoking in Europe is not frowned upon as much as it is in the US. Simply providing a designated smoking area outside with an ashtray would have sufficed. Again, making rules for your adult guests about what they are not permitted to do at the table is inappropriate. If the Dutchess of Sandwich ( or whatever the Hell her title is) doesn't approve of the way these women behave, then DO NOT invite them. Anticipating her guests needs and preferences and setting an example of good manners and decorum would be the way a true Lady would have handled it.

I agree. I don't think Julie would have given any rules at all if she felt they knew how to behave respectfully in the first place.
I am not a fan of 'rules' as an adult but as Adela stated - every house has rules , including Caroline's (removing your shoes when entering, etc.)

reply

Exactly, what house doesn't have rules? They said Caroline S. asks that everyone take their shoes off before entering her home. You don't see everyone throw a tantrum over it.

I'm not wild about Julie, but I just think Caroline S. can't stand not being queen bee every damn second and not having everyone kowtow to her.

And Juliet looks pathetic as Caroline's lap dog esp. after she dry humped her husband last NY.

reply

Totally agree. If Caroline S. hadn't been super late in the first place (which was very rude) then in turn, she would have had sufficient time to get ready for dinner.
The hotel Julie picked was fairly far- but she did schedule ample time.
