So obviously staged

How is some lady who doesn't even cook professionally take down five supposedly highly-respected chefs?

Its either production telling them to throw it or the chefs deciding independently to do it. I can see her beating one or two but not all.

Gave you ever seen Top Chef Masters or The Next Iron Chef? Anyone that cooks can lose to anyone if the taste, texture, or appearance of the food they cook is slightly less successful as someone else's. The act of winning or losing in a contest isn't a sure sign of a show being staged. Lol

The chefs aren't all of the best in the world. Some are just professional because being a chef is how they earn a living. Some of the chefs have competed on other cooking contests like Top Chef where they've had hit and miss results before.

On those shows Top Chefs with years of experience can put out crap under the pressure of competition especially if it's a dish they haven't done in years. It's not out of the realm of reality that a professional chef can make something that people aren't into and a home cook can cook something that people like more.

Also the people judging are not professionals. They are just ordinary people who are probably used to eating Taco Bell & gas station hot dogs.

My family said the same thing. At least, if they aren't going to have real culinary experts as judges, they could get some foodies! These judges obviously have never patronized fine dining restaurants and cook very basically at home. There is nothing wrong with that, but they obviously prefer home cooked food over a professional dish. The odds are very obviously stacked in the home cooks' favor. The last episode, the first two rounds were lost, but my family all agreed that the remainder would be won by the home cook. We were right.

"These judges obviously have never patronized fine dining restaurants and cook very basically at home......they obviously prefer home cooked food over a professional dish."
There is absolutely nothing shown to point to these people "never having patronized fine dining restaurants" or "obviously" preferring home cooked food.

They are all well dressed and articulate so what makes it "obvious" they've never dined in a fine restaurant, prefer home cooked food, or cook very basically at home? Just because food is cooked at home doesn't mean it can't be gourmet. On the show Masterchef judges frequently tell the home cooks they would serve the cooks dishes in their restaurant.

The only judge you might be able to say might not be accustomed to eating in fine restaurants is the young guy and that would be a mistake because you don't know what type of restaurants of restaurants his parents have taken him to.

A person can be well dressed and articulate but that doesn't make them a food critic. I based my opinion of the judges on the critiques they have given. I could be wrong, but that was my opinion. Aren't message boards about discussions and opinions? Also, the contestants are preparing their best five dishes which they have perfected. Masterchef contestants are chosen for exceptional ability and adaptability, they are thrown curve balls and given random ingredients or specifically told what they must prepare. Both shows have home cook contestants, but that's where the similarity ends.

I never said it did make them a food critic. The point was that there was nothing about their appearance, language or demeanor that suggested that they "obviously have never patronized fine dining restaurants"
"I based my opinion of the judges on the critiques they have given."
I've heard their critiques and heard them comment on texture, taste, how well flavors complimented each other, how they liked the heat or acidity of certain ingredients ect.. In other words the same critiques, criticisms, or opinions I've heard from every professional food critic or chef, certainly nothing out of the ordinary or that seemed off base or inappropriate.
"Aren't message boards about discussions and opinions?"
Yes obviously they are, I don't understand your point in making that statement, I discussed your post and gave my opinion. What's the problem?
"the contestants are preparing their best five dishes....Masterchef contestants are chosen for exceptional ability and adaptability,....Both shows have home cook contestants, but that's where the similarity ends."
I know the format of both shows. I never said anything about the shows being similar, I only brought up Masterchef and the quality of the dishes because you said,"These judges obviously have never patronized fine dining restaurants and cook very basically at home." I brought up Masterchef to show that home cooks can cook more than very basically at home. I just didn't see how you could possibly in any way know anything about how these people cook at home based on what we've seen or heard from them.

If you let me choose 5 dishes to cook that I have practiced and know well, I can make a winning dish.

Then select people who are comfortable with home cooking to judge the food.

Make the professional cook things outside their specialty.

Then turn it into a game show where the professional has nothing to gain, but the home cook gets a cash prize. Who's more motivated to win?

I have only watched 2 episodes and the home cook has won 9 out of 10 challenges.

It's a dumb show. Grilled cheese and tomato soup? Milk and cookies?

Dumb.

reply

And now I have seen 3 episodes.

Home cook has won 13 of 15 challenges.

Each home cook has a sob story to tell.

I want to take my kids to Guam.

I lost my job and can't find another.

My daughter has a congenital disorder.

The professionals are paid a standard fee for appearing on the show.

It's not a cooking contest. It's a charity event.

nice summary

i gave up after week 2,

it's pretty much a huge sham/fake out..

basically staff at nbc wanted to give money away to some deserving people but couldn't do it openly so they created a fake show as an excuse to give them money..for cooking...

look beyond the veil you will see the truth !

It really does seem staged. I watch throw down with Bobby Flay/beat Bobby Flay which is basically the same concept with one dish. He wins more than he loses. I don't believe these home cooks beat the professionals on 4-5 dishes.

reply

I don't think it's staged so much as I just don't really think that the professional chefs care that much if they win or lose. They probably all get an appearance fee for showing up, but there's nothing to gain by them winning. The few times the pro chef does win the challenge they sound as if they feel guilty about taking money away from the contestant in the interview afterwards.
