Watching Chicago PD without having ever watched Chicago Fire?

I've been watching Chicago PD since it aired and have been really enjoying the second season although there are definitely some crossovers I don't understand and feel I am missing some of the story. Is it possible to actually watch Chicago PD standalone without Chicago Fire or is it absolutely necessary to watch Chicago Fire to understand what is going on?

I only watch PD and have no problem understanding it. I think there have been maybe 3,4 crossovers with Fire, but usually the storyline is more detailed and gets resolved on the PD part anyway. You can watch only the crossover episodes if you like to be informed of the whole story, but it's not absolutely necessary to.
There is one crossover that included Fire, PD and Law and order: SVU though that was resolved on SVU and it's a major storyline. It's episode 2x20 of PD and the corresponding ones of the other shows. That one I recommend that you watch. :)
And there were the introductions of Antonio, Hank and Jay on Fire's season 1 and 2.

The characters appear on all the shows a lot, not just during crossovers. For instance, at the end last night when they were rebuilding the church, there was a doc from Chicago Med, the State's Attorney from Chicago Justice, and firemen from Chicago Fire. It's not that important, but you're missing connections. ;)

i just watch chicago pd and the only time i watch the others if they do crossovers..... i do watch svu like i watch pd

That's because they renamed Chicago fire and changed it to the Scabby Dawson show.

You certainly don't have to watch both. I do, and will probably give the law show a chance also. I just don't watch the med show. Not big on hospitals and hospital drama. But as far as I can see they work fairly well stand alone.

I don't feel that you have to watch them during crossovers because they usually tell you what happened the week before.
