Season 3 - Varga's background [spoilers]

Did anyone else get the idea that Varga could have been an intelligence asset?

His "job" was to raise dark money for black ops, either as a full-timer for a three letter agency or as an authorized independent contractor.

He's got more going for him than just a run of the mill white collar crook:

1) The crazy high tech trailer
2) Varga seems to know a lot -- he has info beyond the typical white collar crook
3) His hit men/enforcers and their paramilitary skills
4) His ability to get away from the US to Europe and the identity to return

It also kind of answers the "why the Stussy company?" I mean if you are a generic white collar criminal, how is it you pick this one business to strip the assets from? There's a million small businesses, you'd need some kind of privileged database access to find ones with good assets but that are desperate for money and can then be strip-mined.

So if that was true, he was an intelligence asset, some three letter agency telling DHS to kick him loose right away in the ending makes complete sense. He gets off because of that. Of course we didn't see the ending of what happened, so he may also be in jail.

He seemed more like the kind of creature you’d find hovering around Epstein Island. Definitely in bed with the govt but I doubt he’s officially employed by it.

I think he was meant to be a representation of pure pragmatic evil. Not too much different from the Lorne Malvo character in Season 1.
