why would it have taken the deaf guy five years?

He knew where Emmet was the whole time, just like he knew the whole story from the beginning.

I wondered that same thing!
I liked the ending except for a few quibbles, and the 5 year gap is one of those.
Up until that point I was kind of mad because why should he get to live and THRIVE with barely a slap on the wrist when so many others died... but then I was more satisfied after he got killed.
I just don't know why it would take 5 years.

The 5 year leap may have been used to show it took awhile for the deaf guy to find out Nikki had been killed and then to make his plan to kill Emmit in whatever perfect, poetic way he dreamed up; right there in the house with his family and Sy present.

Also, it works to show us that it took 5 years for Varga to be apprehended, which is completely reasonable given how resourceful he has shown himself to be. I love how they had DHS Gloria in a longer hair style with some grey showing. And makeup. She looked completely different for that scene and it worked well.

What I don't quite get is I just don't see Varga as being athletic enough to pull off that escape through the roof of the elevator, but I'm fine with it. I don't think we ever saw him working out or doing anything physical at all, but since he's an international man of mystery, maybe we're supposed to think he has a very strenuous workout that no one knows about.

Finding Varga makes sense to take that long, he has many identities, probably different passports, he goes all over the world, etc.
But Emmet was int he same place under his own name for all 5 years. It shouldn't really be that hard to find him. Oh well I will let it slide, I'm just glad he got eventual justice.

I agree about Gloria! the long hair and makeup and homeland security uniform really suited her. she looked hot!

But why should Emmet die, what did he really do but be so easily manipulated like an idiot. Because he didn't murder his brother nor his best friend, what happened to Ray was an accident because of Ray himself.

reply

I guess because everyone else I liked died or was in a coma. And fleeing the scene when Nikki and the cop were killed. He's just a chickenshit. It made me feel like Emmet got off too easy (for 5 years).

"It made me feel like Emmet got off too easy (for 5 years)."

He got off easier than that, if I remember right. Something like 2 years probation. It was 5 years until he died.

Nicky and Wrench didn't know that Emmit did not kill Ray, but Nicky had already figured out that Varga was in control.

At first, I was sad to see Nicky get shot, but then I realized that she'd killed a lot of people, including shooting at that officer there that plugged her.

reply

Yes and nikki is partly responsible for killing Gloria's stepdad.

reply

My thinking is because that makes it easier for Wrench to not be suspected. If he did it right after Nikki's death, then others, such as Gloria, would've been more likely to tie Emmitt's death to Nikki's. Leaving a time gap might make the motive, and therefore the killer, harder to pinpoint.
