So let's cut to the chase, am I gettin' laid tonight?

That was hilarious! This show just keeps getting better and better. Tonight's episode was classic.

My favorite part was the animation featuring the robot who wandered for 2.38 million years saying nothing but "I can help.", while getting his right arm ripped off by thugs. Then after all that, they tell him he can shut himself down. And he does! Just like the box Chief (or old Chief) Burgle finds in her closet.

Good to see our old buddy Ray Wise who played Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks. Speaking of which, the new Twin Peaks will debut on Showtime on May 21. I got Showtime just to watch that.

Also good to see our old friend Francis Fisher who played Lucille Langston on Resurrection.

"You don't use Facebook?" I loved that line. It was like he thought she had a disease. BTW, I don't use it either.

Question: How did "Dennis Stussy & Sons" get on the toilet in LA? I must have missed something there.

Am I gettin laid or what?

What.

This episode was so philosophically bleak. The meaninglessness of everything. Planet Y. Planet Why? Is that a typo? You must get word back and let them know it wasn't all for nothing. Evolution- the animation showing the rise and fall of worlds. The guy on the plane saying in the beginning, we swam, then crawled, then walked, then ran, and now .... All for nothing.
It's just a story. It has nothing to do with anything. Quantum mechanics. We're all just floating around and once in a while we collide. The soldiers wife simultaneously married and divorced for the same year. SchrΓΆdinger's cat simultaneously alive and dead in it's box. The box that's only purpose is to turn itself off. Your purpose is to provide the cheddar and get screwed.
I can help.
You have helped. Now turn yourself off.

I think Dennis Stussy and sons is the name of the toilet manufacturer. It's so unlikely that the motel would still have the same toilet from the 70's. Motel toilets must get a lot of wear and tear. The letter D was already worn off a bit even in the 70's so he chose the name Ennis Stussy.

If Gloria's suitcase was stolen and then returned empty, how did she have so many different outfits to wear in LA? She wore at least 4 different blouses and she should have been wearing the same outfit from the plane, all she had left was the shirt on her back, every day.

reply

Yep! That's why I loved it so much. It's quintessential Fargo.

Oh so Thadeus Mobley changed his name to Ennis Stussy after seeing the name on the toilet. Ah I see now. Thanks.

I also thought of Schrodinger's cat. My signature back on the old IMDB boards was: "Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, and doesn't."

As to the outfits, she must have done some shopping.

It's like there is this meaningless universe swirling all around, but the only meaning or value is in that little robots one recorded line.
I can help.
It's all chaos and random collisions and coincidences and meaninglessness, but humans can occasionally collide and can help eachother and that is the only thing that gives life any meaning.
Gloria is like that little robot. She cares about people, she wants to help. She chose a job that helps people. She loves her son. Those things are real.
I think she will be wounded by the events which are going to unfold, like that robot was carelessly torn apart, but it will not deter her purpose.
I can help.

Writers are always collecting good names to use for characters. They used to look through phone books, when phone books were a thing, but also just remembered or noted down cool names where ever they see them.. Thaddeus was a writer, so he just randomly saw the name on the toilet and picked it for his own. That is a very writer thing to do.

An excellent and intelligent response. I think you nailed it, Kernel!

Yesssss! The absolute futility of EVERYTHING, from the trip to LA, to the robot's wasted efforts, to the weird box. The look on Gloria's face, when she comes to the conclusion that it was all for nothing. I'm looking forward to her figuring out that there is still a very interesting mystery, here. Particularly once she catches on to the discrepancy in Ennis' age (the 1975 writer couldn't have been 80 in 2010), and starts to question why he changed his name.

I wish this board had Like buttons.

reply

Especially the poor robot's 2.38 million year odyssey ended when a bunch of twits tell him he can turn himself off now. Unlike the robot though, I think Gloria will keep going (as Kernel opined above).

A question just occurred to me. When Gloria took the book out of the box, the title read "The Planet Wyh". When she discovered the copy of the screenplay, it was titled "The Planet Why". Does that mean something to the story?

😎

reply

Good catch! I didn't pick up on that, at all.

reply

Thanks. I get lucky sometimes. Any speculation as to its importance to the plot?

😎

reply

Wyh ask why? I'm not too sure - will have to give it some more thought. Maybe it's just to underline how many questions there are.

reply

Two possibilities:

1. It means something, but we don't know what yet.

2. It's just the writers messing with us.

😎

reply

My Why/Wyh discrepancy: maybe the producer changed the spelling, another bit of disrespect/using of the young writer.

reply

Knowing Noah Hawley, it probably means something.

MMC2-Glad to see you were the Schrodingers cat sig person. We were on a lot of the same boards.

reply

Thanks. I loved that darn cat, but he was so hard to keep track of!

😎

reply

Well yoi cant blame the cat... only the observer.

:-)

The box/the robot whose only purpose was to turn itself off. Brilliant catch.

"If Gloria's suitcase was stolen and then returned empty, how did she have so many different outfits to wear in LA? She wore at least 4 different blouses and she should have been wearing the same outfit from the plane, all she had left was the shirt on her back, every day."

Come on man, did you really want to see a scene of Gloria going to Target and buying a bunch of replacement clothes?

reply

For a short trip I just would not expect her to have a new outfit EVERY scene. I'd expect that if she bought new clothes at all, it would be just a few things. She's a practical midwest lady, not a teenage fashion blogger.

reply

"She's a practical midwest lady, not a teenage fashion blogger."

It's been my experience that when any woman walks into a clothing store, all bets are off with regards to practicality.

reply

This episode reminded me of Barton Fink... except this guy wasn't such a pretentious asshole.

The young version of Vivian Lord was Frances and Clint's kid, Francesca. She looks like a cross between Amanda Seyfried and Frances Fisher... didn't see that much Clint in her.

People will probably complain how there wasn't enough of the other characters in it, but I also thought it was a good one.

reply

Oh wow! Francis Fisher and Clint Eastwood had a daughter. I did not know that. What great casting! She played her Mother's early self. Thanks for that bit of information.

And yes, this was an excellent episode.

😎

reply

Oh, wow. I was wondering if that was Frances' daughter! She looked so much like her. What a beautiful girl. She was good in it too.

reply

Yep... didn't feel like nepotism for a change.

reply

I had no idea! I couldn't believe how much she looked like Frances - now I know why! Normally, I would have gone straight to imdb to find out, but they can kiss my apple.

reply

You can still use wikipedia for information like that... but yeah it's not as fast as the old boards used to be.

Twitter tag works too.

reply

Kiss your apple??

😎

reply

Trying to be polite.

I don't tweet, but I do like the Wikipedia.

reply

Well okay then.

I have twitter, but I'm never really gotten into it. I tweeted about three or four times, I think. Old Skol guy here.

best episode of the season.
only annoyed to see the same actress who is also in The leftovers.
couldnt they get somebody else??

reply

Yes it was!

Who is the actress you're referring to?

😎

reply

Carrie Coon

reply

Well okay then. I never watched that show, so I didn't know who you were referring to. Thanks.

😎

reply

you should watch it,also quality show!

reply

Ah, an HBO series. I just viewed the trailer, and it looks interesting. Maybe I'll look into that.

😎

reply

I recognized Mac from Always Sunny almost immediately.

reply

Mac?

😎

reply

Yeah the guy who plays officer Oscar Hunt (the facebook guy) is Rob McElhenney, and he also stars on Always Sunny In Philadelphia as Mac. I probably should have been more specific.

reply

Yes, I saw his name in the credits for Always Sunny In Philadelphia as Mac, thanks. I just can't place his character here in Fargo.

😎

reply

He's the guy who says "so let's cut to the chase, am I gettin' laid tonight?"

reply

Oh! Okay. Thanks a bunch. You'd think I would know that since I started a thread on him. Old Skol guy here.

😎

reply

Hey no worries, I'm always excited when I see the actors from that show pop up in unexpected places. Glenn Howerton (plays Dennis on Always Sunny) had a several episode role in season 1 of Fargo that I thought was really funny, even though his character had a tragic ending.

reply

I do too. I think it's fascinating when you realize "Hey that's so and so from such and such a movie!"

Who did Glenn Howerton play in Season One of Fargo?

😎

reply

SPOILER ALERT
He played the personal trainer that was trying to blackmail Stavros Milos by writing him and saying "I know about the money". Then Billy Bob found out when Glenn's character got bronzer on the note and took over the blackmail, eventually tying him up to a treadmill with a gun and setting him up to be murdered by the police.

Poor naive Glenn. Much too trusting after he thought his dreams of his "Turkish Delight" bathhouse were coming true.

reply

Oh yeah! That guy. That was a great scene, and you have a great memory. Thanks.

😎

reply

Hey thanks man, I've watched series a couple of times as it is filmed right by where I live. Many of the outdoor sets they use are less than a half hour drive from me.

reply

You're welcome. Wow! So you live in Alberta, eh? That is a beautiful Province. I attended a reunion in Edmonton in 2011. When it was over I also visited Jasper, Banff, and Calgary.
Beautiful country and scenery, and friendly natives!

I live in the USA, in Ohio.

😎

reply

Yeah for sure, lots of beautiful outdoor scenery to take in around here. It's funny to see places that you drive by every day on screen. I'm hoping that the success of Fargo attracts more productions to the area, especially as we have a lot of vacant high end office space in downtown Calgary. Seems like a good place to film.

reply

Yes.

BTW, the reunion was for the First Special Service Force Association. It's comprised of veterans and family of the First Special Service Force. It was a special joint Canadian/American unit formed in WW II. My late father was a Captain in that unit.
We've also been to Italy to tour the battlefields where the Force fought.

😎

reply

That sounds really cool, it's nice to hear about commemorations like that.

On a related topic, have you noticed any locations close to where you live on screen?

reply

Yes I have.
