What is Molly trying to tell Lester at the end of S1?

When Molly is about to let Lester go and he says that he is not the monster she thinks he is, she tells him a story about a man leaving a pair of gloves at a train station.

I saw the whole season and think I know what she is saying but not sure.

Anyone have any ideas ?

Lester and Malvo are the two gloves in her analogy.

reply

Yeah, she's washing her hands of him (You and Malvo deserve each other and what's coming to you), and implying he is the kind or person who would need an example of a simple kindness explained to him (No, you are a monster) as well as that he should have done the right thing even if it cost him (You're not chasing the train anymore we both know you've realized the situation and the train is pulling out of the station you one gloved schmuck).

The gloves do not represent Malvo and Lester or anybody else from the show.

She is testing his ability to think of someone other than himself. He doesn't understand why a person would throw away a glove (even though it is now useless to them) so a stranger could benefit. It is how she knows he murdered his wife and the Chief. It is designed to be compared with his ability to solve the FBI agents riddle. He is clever but apathetic.

That's very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Look at the night sky, where does it end?

reply

I think you're right. And the scene where Lester solves the riddle with the rabbit, fox and cabbage is to show he does have the intelligence. So that wouldn't be the reason he couldn't answer the question about the gloves.

reply

Thank you!! Yes, it's all about what Lester would have done in that scenario. The gloves are not representative of people, lol. Nor is she washing her hands of anything.

Lester is too selfish to ever think about throwing the other glove onto the platform. He'd sit there and lament the loss of the first glove.

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

I could not decide what that was actually about; but now I think it was a test of sorts. like someone said, many would say yeah leave the glove for someone else. a 'malvo' would never think that. also, let's face it, she needed to shove off from him.

reply

This was all about Lester.
Malvo wouldn't have cared about losing a glove, he can acquire another pair in mere seconds.
Lester on the other hand, would have just kept the one glove and complained till the cows come home.
