Why they didn’t stay in that guard tower overnight?

When they showed that tall guard tower they were going to, I thought to myself that it would be a perfect place to stay at night, good thinking! They could’ve taken turns for night watch there. And then all over sudden they are shown on the ground and one of the girls get attacked by a creature. I think it was a big fail on their part since they even had night vision goggles. I’d stay in that freaking guard tower!

The right question is "why the psychologist didn't want to stay in that guard tower with others?"
The clues to the answer lie in her conversation with Anna before the bear first attack. As a psychologist, the mental meltdown of one of the "damaged goods" was predictable when the mutation appeared on them. She was ready to go ahead towards the lighthouse, seperately, if others didn't follow. Still, by stimulating Anna's feeling of guilt, she was hoping Anna would follow her...

Bears can climb and maybe the guard would have been caught instead of Cassie.

I guess for the same reason during a zombie apocalypse they always say "we got to split up guys"

Because you cant have a plot twist without something retarded happening.

"It only she'd stayed inside, she'd have been safe.. but Sally had to go check the letterbox, and suddenly the strange cloud that had only the day before, taken her husband, and that she knew was inevitable, was upon her.. she ran, she fell, and billy watched from the bedroom window, screaming 'mommy mommy' as she was withered into a corpse."

there's your scene.

That annoyed me too. Why go up in the guarpost we're you have perfect visibility and advantage of a high point when everybody leaves when something dangerous is approaching the tower?
