Why does this movie look so fake?

Everything in the background seemed very blurry, lots of scenes had unnatural lighting and tons of lens flares, I thought that all the outdoor scenes were done on a green screen, but after seeing a behind the scenes clip, I was surprised seeing that they actually filmed on location.
So why does everything look so artificial?

I'm thinking its cause it had a lower budget. I do think they kept trying to enhance the colors of the scenes which may have contributed to the fakeness your refering too.

They wanted to give the shimmer area a different look, distinct from the normal world... That's where the strange light and blurriness comes from...

Also, the director seems to like a low contrast, yet digital look to his movies... Check out Ex Machina as well... It is intentional.

For the lower budget, I thought that it looked very good. The bloody attack scenes were gruelingly realistic.

The area inside The Shimmer, I think, was supposed to have an over-saturated look to it.

One weird thing that also made me believe that the movie was shot in front of a green screen, is that the characters rarely interact with the environment. There's a ton of tall grass in many scenes for example, both in the background and the foreground, but we never see the characters going through it. They also don't touch any of the vines that hang from the trees.

Sounds like it was an artistic choice.

What you describe here is almost like portraying the real world as if it was a stage: A vague backdrop of mostly color, fake background elements that can't be interacted with, and of course foreground elements that are in front of the actors (near the front of the stage) but not around them.
