Why didnt they just use a boat? Spoilers!

Why in gods name didnt they just go to the lighthouse by using a boat???
No, instead they choose to go by foot across the whole zone... Why?

And why didnt they have any special forces with them? They know that other expeditions (including military) have just disappeared in the zone, and still they choose to go alone?

I could go on and on about other stupid choices these "smart" scientists made on the expedition, but I wont since there are to many to mention.

I will give the movie some credit for nice photography, some of the effects, the scenery and acting, but the story and the choices the lead characters makes just didnt made any sense most of the time.

mutant alligator sharks.

reply

Agreed. aliens would turn them into mutant alligator sharks.

I think because they needed to make it to the coast first. Remember it repeated a couple times how they needed to make it to the coast and then follow the coast up to the lighthouse?
Why they didn't use a boat once they hit the coast, I don't know, but I think it might have just been a couple hour trek by then if I remember right.

reply

OP meant by boat, from outside the shimmer to the coast, then to the lighthouse.

reply

Ohhhh. Yeah...why didn't they just do that? lol

reply

Because plot must happen damnit!
It's like poetry so it rhymes!!
Director was too busy getting on high on his "hella deep" concept and "too intellectual for plebs" allegories.
GET IT!?

Why didn’t the eagles just fly Frodo to Mount Doom?

reply

Exactly! They even owed Gandalf a favor, which he used to save his own hide.

Now what's funny is that some people claim the eagles are too susceptible to the influence of the Ring, but yet in the Hobbit (not the new movie, though it may be in there), the eagles at one point rescue Bilbo, Gandalf & the hobbit gang and fly them to safety.... With the Ring right there in Bilbo's possession!

So at the very least, as long as they don't know they're transporting the Ring, it is not dangerous to them.

reply

Anything that large flying into Mordor would be immediately spotted. The Ring would be immediately sensed by Sauron and the Nazgul. And remember that the Nazgul had flying winged beasts, and that some of them, especially the Witch-King, knew spells of destructive magic. The eagles would have been engaged and torn to pieces by the Nazgul and their mounts.

because this movie was designed around completely stupid plot actions being interpreted as "DEEP",
when it was just a sophomoric, chick-flick, horror-wannabee fail

Why didn't they cut the rail tracks in unstoppable?

I agree with this post though, it made no sense - just like the majority of the film.

FOOLISH POST.WATCH THE FILM AGAIN,EVERYTHING YOU MENTION IS EXPLAINED.IT IS OK TO ADMIT WHEN YOU ARE NOT UP TO THE LEVEL OF THE FILM YOU DONT GET.

Hey dude, promise me to tell your mama to teach you how to write a post without the CapsLock on next time, ok?

I would assume they have tried boats and pretty much everything else considering they've been studying it for 3 years. Also they don't even know what happens when you get in the shimmer, so entering it and then getting stuck in the ocean doesn't sound like much fun. They didn't have military with them because as they said, pretty much all of the previous expeditions were male and military. They were trying something different. It seemed like they were at the point of just throwing anything at it and hoping it works.

I agree that there were a lot of stupid decisions when they got inside. In fact my main issue was a couple of the characters behaved nothing like you'd expect of someone who volunteered for a suicide mission in the name of science. And I still don't understand why Natalie Portman's husband going crazy made her such a threat.

reply

They mention in the screenplay that they tried using boats, but aggressive whale-sized dolphins kept capsizing and killing anyone who tried sailing in. I think Portman and Leigh were to watch recovered footage from a camera describing the scene or something. It’s a bit stupid but I think they should’ve left something about it in to eliminate possibility of using a boat.

reply

That would've been awesome!!

reply

I was thinking why not just nuke the lighthouse as a last resort. They clearly knew the exact location.
