'Solaris' (spoilers)

So, I haven't read the book , only glanced at the wiki page; but?? Is this movie similar to Solaris? As in, is Area X essentiallya mysterious ecosystem that has evolved to the point where it can metaphysically retain individuals? Basically, "trick" people into thinking they belong there, for whatever reason. Perhaps the ecosystem thrives off human energy. But from what I can tell- this is a similarity between the two stories. Apparently language and writing is Area X's method, while memories is what was used in Solaris. Although it's an older film - the ending is probably the best/creepiest Sci fi ending ever next to 2001. I really suggest checking it out. Basically changed the way I viewed the universe hahah. Looking forward to Annihilation though

I love Stalker and The Southern Reach trilogy is so similar to Stalker and Roadside Picnic that I have a hard time believing the author wasn't influenced by them, although he has said he wasn't. Maybe just a case of two authors coming up with similar ideas, but that's hard to believe when he's published anthologies of science fiction and horror stories. The biggest difference from those stories is the use of hypnosis and mind control.

In any case I think it's a better story than Roadside Picnic which Stalker was inspired by. And yes I agree with the OP there's also a good comparison to Solaris.
