It was a trimmed down, disciplined Oscars this year. Not used to that.

No huge dance numbers with all the costumes. Good speeches, except for one rambling one. But no one pushed off stage with music. I liked this one. It was easy to watch. And Ellen was pretty funny at times. Good to see all the faces that I like.

I agree. This one seemed more respectful of the people they're there to honor.

I didn't mind, though, if speeches rambled because it's still touching to hear what they have to say in one of the greatest moments of their lives.

I thought it was nice. More humor, more human, more about the honorees.

I agree. Allowing the winners more time to speak is a huge improvement in the show. Winning an Oscar is the greatest accolade of their professional lives. They should be given more than 45 seconds to thank the people they worked with, their families and the other people who helped them along the way -- and this year they were given that time. It made for a more graceful and enjoyable show.

On the other hand, do we really need to hear all five songs? Also, the set design wasn't very good this year. It looked like they really cut corners. All those clear plastic Oscar shapes in the background looked like blow-up balloons (or maybe condoms). Seriously, was that the best they could do? The set design in the past has been striking and stylish, but it was just ugly this year.

I was actually curious about the music during winners' speeches. I always knew that winners have a specific amount of time available to speak and when Spike Jonze for on stage, he said that he had "42 seconds". But then, Cate Blanchett's speech lasted 3,5 minutes and Matthew Mcconnaghey also talked for long. However, in this year's Oscars, there was again music for those who talked more than (I guess) a minute.
