What was the meaning of the straw?

The one sister grabbed clump of straw and inhaled, giggling then passed it to the other. It was shoved in crevice then later camera showed the dry straw a few times and again at end of film. What was the meaning behind that?

i supose it has something to do with ''home'' ''home coutry'' - you know,the smell of feilds and rural place they love - because they went to town from there
