Looks like some people were right

Some said this was going to flop and it's looking like it is. I grew up on the original and remember loving it as a kid. I watched it again a year ago after about a 30 year gap and I can't believe how much I don't like it anymore. It's really cheesy, goofy and quite dumb now. So I'm open for a remake but if the remake is not done right then whats the point? So many remakes could be awesome, if only the decision makers don't seem to have their heads up their butts sometimes.

reply

This WAS done right. Read the reviews. Great movies don't always equate to massive success at the box office. When it comes down to it this film is wholesome, simple, and emotional. If that's not what people want to see this month in theatres then so be it. I know I sure as heck am glad I didn't pass it up.

reply

I don't ever read a review or listen to a critic, I go and use my own mind to decide what I think. That's not the point, it's flopping at the box office. It obviously doesn't appeal to many people regardless of if its a good movie or not.

reply

Flopping at the box office doesn't mean it doesn't appeal to an audience. It just means nobody has any interest in watching it because they are pre-judging it based on whatever misconceptions they may hold toward it. E.g. they hate remakes and think this might be trash, or they think this is a stupid kids film so they won't see it, etc.

reply

That sure hasn't stopped millions from going to the most "stupid" of "kids films" The Secret Life of Pets.

It feels almost criminal that something like SLOP is making hundreds of millions of dollars the world over while a lovely, near-perfect film like this goes unnoticed.

reply

I have heard that some of the creators KNEW that the title's acronym was SLoP and thought it was hilarious... since they were well aware how dumb their movie was.

That said, this one feels like those really bland Christian films that just aren't willing to add an actual conflict and character development.

reply

Also means they'd never heard of it. I hadn;t until today

reply

I think it means they could tell from the trailer that it wasn't worth going to the theater for, it looks more like a wait for DVD / streaming to me. I think many others feel that way. There are lots of people who don't hate remakes, they welcome them.

reply

Sorry... but there have been enough dragons in movies that the biggest issue I have is they put hair on the dragon... What were the people making the film thinking? It makes as much sense as me making a movie on unicorns and deciding that a unicorn needs to be a cow with a horn.... Just stupid.

reply

Have you ever seen the Luck Dragon from NeverEnding Story? Or the Luck Dragon in Spirited Away? Chinese dragon mythology has a plethora of dragon types, some with scales, some with hair, and some with a combination of hairy and scales.

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.

reply

This isn't China. It's an American movie so you expect an America vision of a dragon. I don't care if the Chinese have dragons that wear hats made of walnut shells, the vision any American or non Chinese for that matter would be of a European style scaled dragon.

reply

I once again refer you to NeverEnding Story which was a joint American-European production. European dragons also came in hairy and scaled varieties. But I shouldn't expect much from someone with such an obvious narrow view of the world...

I don't know if you're aware of this but I've already changed things. I killed Ben Linus.

reply

You can refer me to Never Ending Story, but frankly to me that wasn't a dragon just some weird cross between a dog and a worm... I expect that Michele Ende was using some of your Chinese dragons for his model... But again.. I'm not Chinese and am not planning on seeing the movie while on an acid trip so I prefer my dragons the right way, as reptiles with scales.

Dragons as a cultural construct BEGAN with Chinese legend, then later shifted to European legend (which did include both scaled and furred varieties). The only thing limiting you from enjoying or accepting Elliot as a dragon is your own narrow and limited viewpoint.

Not to mention, it's a frakkin' fantasy anyway.

reply

Agreed.

First trailer of pete's dragon i saw was 2 months ago something like that, and i thought to myself that's a dog....
Just a dog with a tail and wings.

reply

That is what I thought. I loved this dragon. It did remind me of Falcor and had a dog like appearance. I have to admit I thought this movie was cute with some emotional parts. I could see why it didn't appeal to some people but, for me I thought it was a fairly cute movie. Like I said I liked that they made Elliott with hair which made him warm and affectionate like a Luck Dragon....

reply

I saw this with my daughter last night. It's pretty terrible.

reply

I disagree. I thought it was very enjoyable, and the audience applauded after the movie. I hope people give it a chance. I think most people will be glad they saw it.

reply

It's a very enjoyable family film. Might be out of place for the modern cynical, simpleminded audience and it had no 'dragon fart' jokes. But it's a very good story for anyone who has a heart and old-fashioned sensibility.

"Pretentious" is a three-syllable word for any thought too big for little minds.

reply

@Jedi jones

Here, here!

I love your post...agree with every word.

reply

People flocked to Sausage Party. Don't write off a movie based on box office. Most movie goers are 12-17. Robert Redford would not be in it if it was bad. He started Sundance for heavens sakes. I had to work this weekend but I plan on seeing next weekend. I've heard it's good.

reply

It IS good. I know you'll enjoy it!

reply

I actually went to see it for Robert Redford and his 60 second talk about magic was worth the admission price alone.

reply

Are you saying big stars don't do bad movies?

George Clooney is a pretty big star. I liked Hail Caesar but many didn't. It didn't do that well either.

Most movie goers are not 12-17.

BTW I'm retired and I've seen more movies this last year than I have in the previous 3 decades.

reply

From the Theatre Market Share statistics:

? In 2015, 12-17 year olds had the highest per capita attendance (7.3) and largest increase in per capita attendance, up nearly one ticket per person from 2014. Per capita attendance also increased for 25-39 year olds and people 60 and older compared to the previous year.

reply

Redford is polarizing... If we see it, it will be in spite of the liberal Redford being in it... not because he is in it.

reply

Redford is generally thought of as a conservative. But feel free to hold your Trump signs up down there in Mobile at the kiddie movie. . I'm sure those toddlers will all vote for him.
You might want to avoid movies all together. Except Kirk Cameron movies. Those should be conservative enough for you.
I don't know why you're on boards at all. You contribute nothing.

reply

My but aren't you the complete idiot... If you think Redford is a conservative what do you think it takes to be a liberal? A membership in the communist party?

Redford is a hard core environmental nut job... As for you me supporting Trump... Sorry but I'm a democrat so your aim is so pathetic it makes me laugh.

reply

I know Redford. Being an environmentalist doesn't make you a polarizing liberal. It makes him human. The only democrat he has ever supported is Obama. He actually supported Reagan and Big Bush.
Bob is a rancher and a farmer. Of course he supports the environment.
Go be a Republcan. They are the haters. We don't want you. The only polarizer is you. Trolling kiddie movie boards spreading your propaganda. You're probably on a sex offenders list.

reply

Speaking of haters... go look in the mirror you liberal loon.

reply

Didn't Elliot rip one after he landed on the smokestack? Overall a great film, and my 7 yo loved it.

reply

No. That was the smokestack itself expelling all that soot & smoke.

Not sure I agree it's great. It was a pretty by the book kids' film IMO, but I was wntertained & the movie was held together well enough I wouldn't have minded sitting through it with my kid if I had one.

reply

I saw both Pete's Dragin & Sausage Party. I enjoyed both, but Pete's Dragon for the reason you gave.

reply

There was a dragon fart joke in the movie. It was when he was standing on a chimney and farted the ashes of it in his face.

~NW~

reply

Really?? It was very clear that the smoke stack puffed smoke and ash- there was no fart joke.

Do you just turn your brain off???

reply

Some said this was going to flop and it's looking like it is.

Sadly, this seems to be the case. Only if you have seen the film can you understand how heartbreaking it is to see this fail and not reach a broad audience.

😢

reply

I don't think it will flop... it will have legs. the box office will be a slow burn, not a flameout. Good word of mouth will help.

The budget was only 65 mill, and it hasn't even opened in most international markets yet.

Lets see the dropoff in week 2... i think it will hold.

reply

Trydexin...I hope you are right.

reply

I think people are finally getting burned out on reboots and remakes. Don't reward Hollywood for living off the past.

reply

This is a movie for kids... most kids are unaware that this film is a reboot, or even if they did, they never saw the original. they ain't burned out.

reply

You can still make a kids movie as you say entertaining for the whole family and it failed. I'm sure most parents with young kids are probably getting sick and tired of watching and paying for lazy remakes.

reply

Ain't nothing "lazy" about this film.

It's fantastic.

reply

Probably said lazy because people don't take the time to come up with something new without making a decision to use someone else's idea.

Are you ready or not? It's only up the street. Everybody's dancing. Everybody's on the beat.

reply

Have you seen this film?

Are you ready or not? It's only up the street. Everybody's dancing. Everybody's on the beat.

reply

Really? I rewatched it on Blu-ray and I like it even more now than I liked it as a kid, and I was obsessed with it as a child, and now more than ever I really wish Helen Reddy, whom I gained a new respect for after seeing live in concert on her un-retirement tour, had continued her film career.

If this new one flops, it flops independently of the original.
