NOT compared to the 1977 original?
I haven't seen the original movie, so I'm wondering if I'd find the new one more enjoyable without anything to compare it to.

I never saw the original--except for disjointed bits and pieces--but I can't imagine liking it anywhere nearly as much as I loved this film. I found he character of Elliot alone convincing, believable, and above all, lovable (much like a gigantic green dog with wings ), and he is not the film's only asset.

The ending, IMHO, was especially satisfying. It was very comforting to learn that Elliot had a family to go home to.

I enjoyed it more than the original. From the first 5 minutes to the end, I was into it, into the story, and when it ended, I wanted to see it again. Even now, 2 days later, I still see scenes from the movie and it still makes me think about it. The soundtrack is great because I can replay the scenes in my head while listening to the music, and I would love more people to see this because I know that they would enjoy it. It's not for everyone, but it is one of the best movies I have seen this year.

Same here. It was so good I didn't want it to end. My soundtrack arrived yesterday and I was tearing up while listening to it.

My wife and I have been listening to it on Spotify (listening to it now). I may need to download it from Amazon so I can listen to it on my computer also.

It is GREAT! Stands completely on its own, no need to know anything about the original. Wish more people would go see it, so Hollywood would make more like it. Loved it from 10 minutes in to the end. Yay for a good time. Take your parents, grandparents and grandkids. You won't be sorry. Truly a story for all generations.

If you are 6, you should be able to make it through the film. If you are older than 6, you will be looking at the time after 10 minutes.

This film is pretty bad. The characters are 1 dimensional, Elliott has 0 personality. Nothing. Nada. Zip. The movie lacks any charm or interest. The music is bad at best and totally distracts from the film. At 90 minutes long it is still too long.

Disagree 100% with everything you said. Great movie.

If you haven't seen the original then you won't have anything to compare it to other than stuff which isn't really comparable. Which makes assessment of comparable enjoyment levels a bit tricky, in my view. Not really a fair question to ask. Better organise a quick viewing of the original so that you will know whether you find the new one more enjoyable.

And your question confuses me: if you haven't seen the original, what might you find the new one more enjoyable than? Just enjoyable, surely, not more enjoyable?

reply

I know that I would have found it far more enjoyable as an "original" stand-alone product.

But when you seek to catapult off an original and beloved classic . . . be prepared to be compared to it!

The original laid a fine foundation that they could build on almost 40 years later. Too bad they built row-housing on it! Very nice, modern, not-built-to-last row-housing. But still row-housing. It looks very impressive at first; but doesn't have a lot of staying-power. This movie will be all but forgotten in a few years amidst a sea of shallow modern clones and in 40 years barely a trace of it will be found for future screen-writers to build upon.
