Totally agree. The old one is far too dated now. Never really liked it. This is exactly as you described.

What a great film. Can't wait for the upcoming sequel......Pete's Dragon vs Godzilla !! My money is on Godzilla.

It certainly tells the story without jumps and at the right pace. The characters were largely sympathetic and even the villain of the piece is satisfying at the end.
