You'll have fewer disorders if you don't give them names.

We all have issues, but if you want more pity then give your issue a name (or the name some narcissistic doctor gave it). See? They have issues too!

THANK YOU!

Hi, Dr. Film here, just so you know you're suffering from ijustsawamovieitis. Try reading.

Diagnoses are important for insurance purposes. However it is true that treating symptoms is a better idea than trying to treat a whole disorder.

A disorder is a name for a negative pattern, so while your statement is true on the surface, it's wildly unhelpful. You may as well reject all disorders and then nobody will have any. Also, don't forget the upsides to accurate labeling which include improving outcomes by streamlining searches for solutions and externalization of blame. At best, your suggestion is simple denial which is not an effective strategy. It's fine if that's the strategy you want to use for yourself, but when you recommend it to others, you had better be ready to accept the damages you cause when people take your advice.

I'm grateful to have a name for my disorder, and the knowledge that's there's millions of people out there just like me who had childhood trauma and then grew into adults with a very specific set of symptoms.

I didn't realise many people were like me, I just thought I was a freak, a bad person, defective. I didn't know it could be treated, I thought I was just a terrible person.

made you look

reply

Exactly. I felt such a sense of relief when I was first diagnosed (Generalized Anxiety and Panic Disorder and OCD). It meant that I wasn't "crazy" and that what I was experiencing was very much real and, very importantly, treatable.

Misidiotaicy - the dislike of idiots.

reply

That is a very ignorant statement

Wish this site had thumbs up (and down) because your comment deserves thumbs up! Right on the money. People get to stay stuck believing they're doomed by a unique mental issue, while the "doctor" gets to "prove" a theory, write a book, or at least article about it and gain some degree of fame. All from a theory (read: an opinion) along with a degree in psychology or psychiatry. Someday it'll be proven that it's all purely theoretical BS.
But shhhh, still lots of people to rip-off and minds to manipulate.

Under our clothes, we are all naked! Bare nipples (of females), genitals or buttocks is nudity.

Ha! Like you're pretending that you know science, or how private councelling sessions work... or word definitions? <<<---- Not a theory; fact.

reply

So undiagnosed symptoms are OK are they? I see.

reply

Nope. Symptom's will still exist and naming them gives them understand. In turn makes those suffering these symptoms reassurance.
