Question about the ending (Spoilers)

Having just caught up on Transformers Prime (I'm a G1 original fan by the way). But at the end of this short tv movie, why didn't Optimus just take the Matrix of Leadership out of his chest and use it that way? This way he wouldn't have needed to die.

The first time he used it on Transformers Prime was against Unicron, he didn't take it out then either. This is confusing to me as in the past Transformers incarnations it was able to be taken out and used without the previous owner having to die.

Scorpwanna,

Simply put, this ain't G1, go figure. Different day and age, different writers, and for that matter, think about all the big differences, one of which that seriously pissed me off was the fact that they used Skylynx's name for a friggin predacon and Skylynx even though he was a animal type bot was never a predacon.

All I can say is that every time we get another set of writers they only seem to follow a set of basics for rules when it comes to the original scripts from comic book times of G1, I mean if you look at some of the other stuff that has come out over the years for Transformers, there was a set of comics that had Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime combining to form some Ultra Prime which might have been ok back in the G1 line however it never happened, so again simply put, Different day & age.

Or even more simply put, they wanted to give the movie a dramatic ending and they needed Prime out of the way for the upcoming cartoon which will have Bumblebee as the leader of the central Autobot team. And they couldn't think of any other way to kill Prime off.
