Travolta shouldn't have frowned the whole time.

I think he did a pretty good job in getting Shapiro's mannerisms and tone down. But the frown, just no.

He was copying Bob Shapiro's normal expression.

Yes but his (Travolta's) frown is much more pronounced and thetefore he shouldn't have done it. It looked horrible.

I think he did a great job of aping Shapiro's mannerisms in a similar way to how he imitated Nic Cage in Face/Off. The term that comes to mind is affectionate parody.
