I hate even bringing this up....but the use of the 'N' word

I am so tired of this term and the rampant use of it! I believe it should not be used by anyone no matter what their ethnic origin. Now, I am not for censorship and I understand why Twain used the term but I believe that good taste dictates that this and other pejorative terms be put on the junk heap of history.

OK...I will get off my soap box now..

PS I enjoyed the film.

reply

Yeah it was a bit overdone in the film. It almost seemed desperate in its use. Then again, the movie was a bit overhyped.

Curiously enough, while reading your post I was watching "First Take" on ESPN, a US sports network. And Chris Rock was a guest and the subject was brought up and Mr, Rock said he does not think that white collar people ought to make decisions for blue collar people.

What do you think?

What is totally weird for me (not from the USA) is that people say "N-Word". If you are talking about the word *beep* why not say *beep* I agree that you shouldn't say *beep* in the first place with the only exception being that you are talking about the use of the word *beep*

If you are talking about the word it's not like you are saying it to someone to insult them. To me it seems like just a weird type of self censorship.

reply

It is weird that someone would use *beep* when having a discussion about the word *beep.*

The "elites" make plenty of decisions for lower class people. They write the laws (and decide how much time you will spend in prison), collect your taxes, dictate how much you'll pay for your food/clothing/home/phone/internet/etc. It seems to me that making decisions on language is the least of the problem...

That doesn't mean I'm endorsing censorship though, just being realistic.

I read an interview with Chris Rock with New York Magazine where he indicated that he thought it was overhyped. But it wasn't his choice. They had a big screening with a bunch of industry folks and critics in the audience, and people really liked it and were clamoring to distribute it. In the interview Chris Rock said, "Something inside me keeps saying, This is a little movie."

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

reply

it's a power trip and a finger in the eye to whites.

He knows that if a white person used the word they'd be fired / banned / bashed

He knows he can use the word and not be criticized.

it's a way of saying F you whitie.

it gets old.

They could have made a movie; instead they made this.

i'm brown and i'd love to not be allowed to say the N word [edit: aka and be white. not that i say the n word. ever.]

reply

Chris Rock is a movie star; hardly 'blue collar!'

reply

That was his point. He went around the panel and stated that all the people there, including himself, were affluent. He said that if a certain strata of society uses that word, then who were they to dictate the actions of others.

I was surprised that Rock used it in the movie. I mean there are other words, like Negro, and Colored he could have used.

reply

I get your point, those words can be equally offensive, but there are other options. I know political correctness can be boring and oppressive. I am just asking for a little class and togetherness.
Did I just get on that soap box again?

reply

Yes because Black people still use those words...

reply

but isnt "the N word" censorship for n ig ger? by not using "the N word" you're actually forcing a more racist term into peoples mouth. and it is kryptonite to black peoples ears, they scream to the heavens when they hear it.

reply

I thought everybody knew that black people using it between themselves bears no resemblance to use by a white person. As for "good taste", comedy is not in good taste. I laughed my head off in the theater and I loved they way the characters threw that word around. Now since you're interested in good taste in a funny movie, how'd you like Cedric the Entertainer?

reply

I laughed. Cedric the Entertainer was great as he always is. I know that one of the pillars of comedy is irreverence. Comedy is the child in the crowd that hollers that the Emperior has no clothes. I get it. I don't like the use of the 'N word by anyone. It has caused pain and is cruel.

Have a happy holiday everyone.

Did the word end in a "er" or a "a"? According to blacks it's OK if you are black and use the N word that ends in an "a" not an "er". At least that was brought up during the Trayvon Martin murder trial by his former girlfriend. I find it sad overall but I'm not black so I have no right to judge them according to society.

reply

You have every right to opine no matter what you look like. That is the first time I heard about the last letter denoting political correctness . I have heard and seen variations on the word. Poor Trayvon,😞 he was guilty of walking whie black.

I totally agree with you. I'm black and I feel no one should use this word including black people.

Thank you clandestine-rose. This can be a touchy subject but, it looks like rational adults can discuss it without malice.
