Because it felt like it. I remember playing Silent Hill 4: The Room and this movie was very similar. Haunted apartments, creepy atmosphere, ghost-like creatures, insane visuals, you could even hear the siren from Silent Hill at some point. I really enjoyed it.
shareThey borrowed a few video game sounds. When the old man was taking out trash and went to back hallway you could hear the witch from L4D2 crying. It was exact so i know it was from the game. Probably not a ripoff so much as an homage.

Nope. It's a homage. Primarily it's a homage to the old Chinese Jiangzhi movies from the 80s. And much of the ghosts and monster in this movie is taken from Chinese folklore. The ghosts with the umbrellas are actually spirits collecting stray ghosts. Look it up.
