Fantastic film! Disappointed by the average rating.

yes maybe they don't understand chinese folklore and the story etc

I thought it was incredibly solid. Chinese cinema has come a long way. I'd go as far as to say surpassing British cinema these days.

I think the rating is pretty fair. It was we'll acted, had great atmosphere, good FX and many of the characters had depth to them. But...

1) It was meant to be a horror movie but failed to really scare. A shame as the ideas and potential was there but never fully realised.

2) Ambiguous ending open to interpretation none of which I feel are satisfactory as they all conclude that a part of the movie is 'a dream'. The 'dream' to explain things away is rarely a good plot device and isn't here.

3) Was too dour to be a true homage to the Mr Vampire movies which had a great sense of fun about them. I know this contradicts point 1 but the movie needed to do one or the other and didn't really do either. This is probably because it was trying to homage 80s Hong Kong 'horror' movies generally not just the Mr Vampire series.

Other than those criticisms, I still mostly enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to fans of Mr Vampire and other Hong Kong 'horror' movies but the ending and lack of clear focus on being a homage or a horror makes it difficult for me to recommend to anyone else. I therefore gave it 6/10 but on a percentage scale I'd give it 64%.
