Glasgow's fairly middle class at heart.

Although much , if not all, of Trainspotting was filmed in Edinburgh , it is set in Glasgow. Glasgow has Scotland's third oldest university as well as the well known Glasgow School of Art. It has some pretty Georgian squares and , whilst living in any city might only feel as good as the friends you have or how much enjoyment you have from what you do, the high rise 1960s flats that seem to have become disproportionately associated with Glasgow seem far more visible and potentially isolating in some other cities eg Newcastle.

Sorry, you're speaking out of your arse.

The story of Trainspotting is most definitely set in Edinburgh. I believe the first movie was partly filmed in Glasgow (as a substitute, for whatever reason) but there is a more obvious focus on Edinburgh locations in the follow-up.

Alright , so I got the cities the wrong way around. However , saying someone is 'speaking out of your arse' is far too strong for what I did. I made a mistake. I also suspect that you wouldn't have made such a deal of it if you'd been happy for Glasgow to be described as fairly middle class at heart, which is not something you offered any argument against.

you even been to either?
Glasgows art galleries and it's school of art fail in comparison to Edinburghs as does the architecture which is fairly blah. Edinburgh is one of the prettiest cities in the world not to mention it has the fringe every year which is incredibly exciting. Glasgow does have a huge amount of curry houses however.

If you're going to make a sweeping comment on the class of a city based on flimsy facts and then go on to suggest Trainspotting is set in Glasgow, I think it's fairly warranted to be accused of talking out your arse. I concur with Fluig.

The original movie was almost entirely filmed in Glasgow, scene in Rannoch/Courrour aside, much cheaper to work in Glasgow (Despite it's supposed middle class heart).

OP is partly correct, have you read the book? It is written in Glaswegian. The book is set in Glasgow, the film is set in Edinburgh.

I love living in Glasgow been here pushing 8 years and it does have an undeserved reputation but it's definitely not middle class at heart. It's working class industries have done much more to shape the city in the last 100-150 years than middle class ones and many of it's areas frequently come out near the bottom for Western Europe in things like health, crime rate etc... you know all the things you don't assossiate with a middle class city.

Again, great place to live, especially if you're young, good night life, well maintained city center, really cheap cost of living but definitely not a middle class heart compared to most of Scotland or the UK's cities.

Maybe I overestimate then. From a University of Glasgow student perspective, some could have a very middle class, even feel of upper class, experience, given the age of the university and the history of Glasgow which has some grand buildings in its centre. Weirdly, I've been to Glasgow twice and never actually stumbled upon the university which is a shame as the architecture arguably looks the best of any Scottish university in photos.

Have you ever been to Edinburgh because its architecture, univerity and just general ambience *beep* all over Glasgow.
You aren't going to have a particularly "upper class" experience at Glasgow university eithee. want that go to Cambridge/Oxford or recently Leeds (which is where the toffs go)

What utter lies. Edinburgh is nothing but a cesspool of junkies, hookers, shifty one way systems. People do t travel from all over Scotland to shop in Edinburgh, they go to Glasgow. A city that has more to it than a castle and one famous street.

yeah its got a motorway that lets you skip over the city in 1/2 hour and get to the mountains
