Way too short, should have been a lot better

Klondike failed to catch my interest because it tried to squeeze "everything" into merely 6 hours, which left no time at all to character development and description/elaboration on the environment. The show has so many weaknesses, I don't know where to begin. But here are some of them:

For example, why should I care about Bill avenging Ep's death, when all I know about Ep is that his gambling addiction jeopardized everything? As far as I'm concerned, Ep held Bill back, and even in his death he caused Bill problems. And what on God's green Earth was the point of the redhead whose name I can't even remember having heard? The only consequence she had to the story is by sitting on her high horse and judging the mountie, yet another completely redundant character with no consequence to the main story. I don't know if her introduction to Bill was supposed to misguide the audience to believe she would be his love interest, but surely she should have been erased from the script altogether - a thoroughly uninteresting and annoying character.

I believe that a lot of the problems could have been solved by making the series at least 4-6 episodes longer. The entire first episode should have been dedicated to Bill and Ep's journey to Dawson City, only. This would have left time to build Ep's character and show his positive qualities, to make them balance out his bad ones. This would make the audience care more about his death. Also, the journey to Klondike would not seem like the two-day treck that it appeared to be in the show. Also, if they'd met the redhead in time for us to hear about her hopes and dreams, and how she wound up in Swiftwater's bathtub, she wouldn't have been such a waste of space.

At no point do we see Bill and Meek (whose relationship suddenly goes from bad to BFFs without explanation) improve the claim, and at no point do we see Bill and Meek become friends after Bill was forced into cooperation.

Also, we're never shown the process of extracting gold, which is kind of silly for a show based on a gold rush.

A weak story, a weak script, one-dimensional characters, and not a trustworthy environment. 5/10 for scenery and entertainment.

I recently finished watching this, and I felt exactly the same. Everything was very rushed, and there was no time do develop the characters, their backgrounds and history.
I enjoyed it but I expected much more, especially considering that in the first two episodes they presented a good plot.
