The Arrest of Devereaux

It was amazing Devereaux never asked why he was being arrested nor did the arresting officers at the airport even bother to state why he was being arrested. What happened to the line.."You're under arrest for.....". Can someone explain why firstly, Devereaux never asked why he was being arrested (okay, im sure he knew it was the rape, but still, even guilty people always ask why they are arrested!), and secondly why the cops just arrested him without stating the charge?

reply

Well, I think you missed two scenes, otherwise you wouldn't make this remarks.
- When Devereaux is asked to leave the plane the detectives tell him "We need you to come with us !" (It's at 44 minute mark). He simply replies: "What for ?"

- On the next scene when they handcuff him, and are waiting for N.Y.P.D. to come and pick him up, they say "You're under arrest"; Devereaux replies: "What is it about ?".

I found it a bit strange that his rights were never read, when they arrested him since any official person is obliged to read your rights from the constitution. But on the other hand, Maestro Ferrara did a great job with this scenes... they are as real as they can be.

reply

Yeah, but Devereaux still should have shouting out why they were arresting him. When people are getting arrested out of the blue like that they usually put up more resistance even when guilty so wouldnt say it was as real as can be. Especially as he was a narcassistic arrogant Frenchman, he would not just submit so easy with just a whimper.

reply

ACtually they don't need to read you your rights unless unless you are both arrested and about to be interrogated. He was just arrested; they were not questioning him, so they didn't need to read him the Miranda rights.

reply

Police don't have to state why they are arresting someone.
