The Shirt makes ending unexplainable

On the shirt itself:

Sophie 1 asks Ethan 2 where he got that sweater/shirt combo from.
Either the impostors dont know where the real Ethan got it from, so he dodges the question/cant explain it.
-or-
The shirt doesnt belong to ethan 1 and sophie 1 is geniuenly curious as to where it came from.

Maybe it belonged to whoever ethan 2 was before meeting the real couple or it was just always there.
He even comments "These are my clothes i guess"

So apparently the Shirt is a thing, because she knows she is about to have fun with the fake ethan and inquiring about his clothes is just weird.
She already knows hes fake..so why ask that?
To me it means, the writer wanted us to pay attention to it.

Now about the Bacon scene.

Its Ethan 2 and Sophie 1.
Hes wearing that shirt.
Also he is definietly 20% cooler in that scene, than Ethan 1.
50% even..
She knows its Ethan 2 and shes totally cool with that.
She even said she didnt want to leave.... but leaving with the cooler Ethan, albeit a fake one, is quite ok.
She makes him bacon, because she wants him to be happy.

Its Ethan 2 and Sophie 2.
The shirt strikes neither of them as odd.
Also he is confued about her making him bacon.
He thought he escaped with sophie 1 because he fell in love with her, hence his confusion.

Its Ethan 1 and Sophie 2.
She cooks bacon.
If this was sophie 1 just finally being nice to ethan 1, she would have at least inquired about the shirt.
The same way she wondered about it unncessarily in the scene with ethan2.

Its Ethan 1 and Sophie 1.
Because of the shirt she assumes its Ethan 2.
Since its ethan 1 he is confused by her preparing him bacon.

Since every scenario is possible, its very difficult to deduce which one is the actual outcome.

To me the strongest indicators that Ethan 2 escaped is the shirt and the invisible wall.

The impostors know whats up.
They probably spend a lot of time there and they know the place well enough to get around the place fast and unseen.

Its clear to them that there is some sort of unexplained force involved and being stuck there long enough, they likely tried to escape at least once already.

He knew he would hit a wall.

So "ethan" running into a wall suggests to me, that its ethan 1 because he just didnt know he would smash into the barrier.

Ethan 2 escaped, wearing that shirt.

But then again...everything is possible.

I don't think it's all that complicated. The real question is whether or not the real Ethan brought home the real Sophie or if she decided to stay with the fake Ethan.

Interesting. Except E1 and 2 are distinctly different and the one who leaves is physically E1 (wears glasses, his hair etc).

He is cooler indeed, but he used to be cool too (the swimming pool thing and all that) so he is simply a better husband now and again he is his cool old self. Also dont forget their conversation in the bed in the end, it is about past experiences which only E1 would know.

The only thing that really connects him to E2 is this shirt. However, and imo the movie makers uses this shirt to signal to us the viewers that E1 had changed (amped up the coolness factor) just as S1 had changed (with her accepting bacon). And they lived happily ever after.

It's interesting that you thought of these possibilities!
But I don't think it could be E2 who got out. He probably didn't know about the fence at all: S2 said to E1 in the guest house that as the original couple falls out of love, the dopplegangers get more freedom to move around. She reminds him that at first, they couldn't get out of the guest house. So E2 and S2 probably did not get the opportunity to explore the premises, since we can assume that the first time they got out of the guest house was the night just before.
Plus it doesn't fit with E1's character to leave S1 behind, and he's wearing his glasses in the end.

My impression of the first shirt scene was that they really were Ethan1's clothes. It didn't seem to me that Sophie1 was actually unfamiliar with the shirt, rather that she wanted to see what Ethan2 knew about it. Testing him, as Ethan1 had suggested earlier.

I see the ending as pretty straight forward, pairing Ethan1 with Sophie2. The look on his face in the final shot is him realizing that both Sophies deceived him and that his wife preferred to stay locked up with the other guy than to be free with him.

I just watched the movie. In the earlier scene Sophie 1 asks Ethan2 where he got the sweater. She never mentioned the shirt that is the same as the one he wears at the end. However, as I don't think he had a chance to take all his stuff from the weekend when they left, I guess he had 2 of the shirts (in the same implausible way Sophie had two complete jogging outfits.)
